What Happens Around You Should Concern You

Amos 6:6 – You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. (NIV)

6:6 – Woe to those addicted to feeling good—life without pain! those obsessed with looking good—life without wrinkles! They could not care less about their country going to ruin. (Message Bible)

You drink all the wine you want and wear expensive perfume, but you don’t care about the ruin of your nation. (Contemporary English Version)

God sends Amos from a remote and interior village to speak to city people in Israel. Amos comes without any claims of prophetic abilities or background. Amos only has a message to the rich, the wealthy, the people living in affluence.

Through Amos, God tells the people that being wealthy is not an insurance against punishment from God. Having money and political power will not stop God from punishing their wrong doing. Amos calls their attention from their achievements to what God demands. Have you taken time to reflect on what God demands?

In our passage of consideration today, God tells them that they will suffer because they don’t think beyond themselves. God through Amos tells them that ignoring what goes on around them will destroy them. What happens around you should concern you!

You can afford food but people around you can’t afford. You can afford school fees and medical fees but people around you can’t afford. Ignoring what happens around you will destroy you. What happens around you should concern you!

You are living a comfortable life while others around you struggle? Won’t this people gang up against you someday? Won’t there be a revolution against you the wealthy? Are you safe ignoring them? Will God bless you when you ignore the needy around you? What happens around you should concern you!

You live a life of minding your own business? You can’t warn your family, friends, neighbors, etc., to stop offending God? Won’t the evil you ignore soon spread and affect you and it will be too late to react? What happens around you should concern you!

If you are silent about evil going on around you, you are not civilized, you are complacent and an accomplice. You claim like Cain that you are not your brother’s keeper? That is what God says you will regret. What happens around you should concern you!

You see evil creeping in society and you mind your business but speak nothing against it? You see the church sliding into apostasy or chaos and out of fear of powerful church leaders you remain unconcerned in order to be safe? God promises to shatter that safety in a manner you will regret. What happens around you should concern you!

You brother or sister is sliding into drug abuse. You keep quiet because you don’t want to be a sell out? When they are deeply addicted and helpless, they will become your burden that you can’t ignore. What happens around you should concern you!

You don’t warn your children of promiscuity and riotous living? Unwanted children will soon be your burden. Addicted and burdensome adults will be your old age assignment. If you don’t care to discipline them and correct them early enough, you’ll pay a heavy price. What happens around you should concern you!

God created us to love Him and love others around us. God commands us to care about Him and care about those around us. God wants us to help the needy and poor around us. Ignoring those around us is ignoring a God given assignment. What happens around you should concern you!

We are to preach God’s word to those in the wrong. Preach it with an intention to win them back. Preach it to make it clear that their evil will bring disaster. We can’t and shouldn’t ignore the evil around us. What happens around you should concern you!

If you are in a boat traveling, will you ignore someone drilling a hole under the boat? Will you say it’s none of your business? Will you retreat to civilized silence? Won’t your silence be the death of you? Yet we are silent as people in church drill holes of sin that will cause God to punish us all. Yet we are silent as children drill holes in our collective lives that will put all of us in jeopardy in future. Yet we are silent as people drill holes in welfare and safety of the community that will soon lead to insecurity and political instability. What happens around you should concern you!

May God help us to be correctly concerned about what happens around us. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
