John 8:51-53 (NIV) – 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
Jesus is having a heated discussion with Jewish leaders who hate Him. At this point of the discussion He tells them that whoever believes and obeys His words will never die. Never die?
The Jewish leaders asked Him immediately what He means. This is because Abraham died and yet He says the best of the people who believe in Him(Jesus) will not die? Wasn’t Abraham a good person? Wasn’t a person a believer? They even asked Jesus why great and all prophets have died. Weren’t they believers? Weren’t they good people?
If great people died, what do you mean those who believe in your word will never die? If believers like Abraham died, what do you mean those who believe in you will never die? What do you mean those who believe in you will never die?
Those listening that time all of them died. They are not alive today. Does that mean no one believed in His(Jesus) words? Or is there another meaning of they will never die?
John 11:25-26 (NIV) – 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
When Jesus goes to resurrect Lazarus, He repeats almost the same words to Martha the sister of Lazarus. The words of Jesus “will never die,” get clearer at this point. Jesus repeats that whoever believes in Him will never die. Only that at this time He adds words that say “even though they die.”
Therefore the will never die can still come true even though someone dies. Therefore the death of Abraham and other prophets doesn’t mean they cannot be included in the category of those who will never die. The death of the disciples and other believers who listened to Jesus on that day doesn’t mean that they cannot be included in the category of those who will never die. You can die today and still be listed among those who will never die.
John 11:25-26 (NIV) – 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Will live, even though they die.” It is in future. The living is in future. The will never die is in future. Even though they die is present. They can die at the present time, but will never die is in future. Will refers to a future time. Will live, meaning that life is in future. Will never die, meaning that time of no death is in future. They will never die. We will never die!
Will never die refers to a future time when the world will come to an end. A time when death and dying will come to an end. It refers to a time when eternal life will be ushered in. At that time, we will never die.
1 Corinthians 15:51-55 (NIV) – 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed — 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
A time is coming in future when death will die. Believers will be saved never to die again. Death will be defeated. We will never die as Jesus promised! All who have believed in Jesus throughout history will never die!
Revelation 21:4 (NIV) – ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
This is a prophecy of the soon coming future. No more death. The promise of Jesus will come true. All who have believed in His words, will never die. Even though they die now, they will live and they will never die, once that time comes in the near future. We will never die!
Let us believe in Jesus and His words. Even if we die for now, it remains true that a time is soon coming when we will never die. Until then may God keep us faithful to His words. May He grant us happiness and peace for now and then at that time, may His words come true, that we will never die. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
