Deuteronomy 8:19 – If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
To make it is to succeed. To make it is to achieve goals you set. To make it is to be at a better place than before. We are all striving to make it. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
God promises that His people will make it. It is an assurance that after struggles we shall make it. Therefore He sends this message in advance shortly before we make it. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
God gave this message to Israelites just before they entered the Promised Land. After forty years, they were about to make it and live way better lives than they ever imagined. Therefore God gives them this message. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
This message was written so that in their future comfort, they will be reminded. After they succeed and lose appetite for spiritual things, this message was to be a reminder and warning. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
This is the main message of Deuteronomy and particularly chapter eight. God narrates how He sustained them in their wilderness struggles. God shows that their success is from Him. Therefore they shouldn’t forget Him. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
Deuteronomy 8:2 – Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
Deuteronomy 8:15 – He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
Deuteronomy 8:16 – He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
Deuteronomy 8:17 – You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”
Deuteronomy 8:18 – But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
When you make it, don’t forget that God led you to this success. Don’t forget how God led you through struggles and discouragement. Don’t look at your strategies and efforts and forget that they were God given. Abilities that have brought you this far are from God. It is God who has made you succeed. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
Deuteronomy 8:4 – Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
When you make it, don’t forget how you survived on meagre resources that miraculously didn’t diminish. Don’t forget how a small income lasted a whole month. Don’t forget how that small house was the best and comfortable. God miraculously made your little to be much and sufficient. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
Deuteronomy 8:10 – When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Deuteronomy 8:11 – Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
Deuteronomy 8:12 – Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,
Deuteronomy 8:13 – and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,
Deuteronomy 8:14 – then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Success can make you proud. Pride makes you forget God who brought you this far. When you settle down in the best life ever, remember it is God who brought you this far. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
Don’t be so proud that your forget your parents. Your parents made a contribution. Some teachers made a contribution. Some strangers, relatives and friends made a contribution. Don’t be so proud that you are ashamed of them. Pride can make you forget and despise others. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
Deuteronomy 8:19 – If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
Deuteronomy 8:20 – Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
If you forget how you made it, you will have begun your journey to failure. Others who have failed forgot how they made it. They forgot God. They forgot people. They failed. Don’t fail yourself by forgetting. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
May we never forget how we prayed for a partner. May we never forget how we prayed to pass exams. May we never forget calling people to pray with them during job interviews. May we never forget how the business started and those God brought by our side. May we never forget that God was behind all these. When you make it, don’t forget how you made it!
May God help us to remember Him and how He has brought us this far. May we never forget how we have made it this far. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
