Titus 1:16
They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
New Living Translation
Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.
A claim is a statement one makes but he or she can’t prove that it is right. You claim to have money but you have not shown us the money. A statement that seems factual but lacks supporting evidence.
To substantiate claims is to give evidence that proves the statement you made to be right. To substantiate claims is to provide further convincing details. To substantiate claims is to remove any doubt. To substantiate claims is to address the contradiction between what you declared and what others see.
Unless a claim is substantiated it will remain open to doubt. Unless a statement is substantiated it should be treated with contempt. Unless a statement is substantiated it is not worth consideration.
The Bible in our text talks about people who claim to know God. They claim to be believers. They claim to be heaven bound. They claim to be members of the church. They claim to be trustworthy. They claim to be faithful. They claim to be honest. They claim to be slow to anger. The problem is that they cannot substantiate their claims. Can you substantiate your claims?
They claim to know God but their daily lives practically deny the existence of God. They claim to know a powerful God but they depend on the weak useless powers of witches. They claim to have faith in God but don’t seek God in prayer. They claim to trust God and get guided by His Will but they never read the Bible. What they say cannot be substantiated by their practice. Can you substantiate your claims?
They are theoretical believers in God but practical atheists. That is because they cannot substantiate their claims. If you believe but do not practice you are not a believer, because your life can’t substantiate your faith!
You can’t believe in a loving God and you hate others. You can’t believe in a forgiving God and you live in guilt of sins you have confessed and repented. You can’t believe in a providing God and you struggle with returning tithes and offerings. Your daily life must substantiate your beliefs.
A hypocrite is a person whose life cannot substantiate their beliefs. A hypocrite speaks faith but practices a lack of faith. A hypocrite identifies with the church but lives a life that the church preaches against. A hypocrite preaches morality but lives an immoral life. A hypocrite preaches water and drinks wine. A hypocrite cannot substantiate the claims of their faith!
Dear God, help us to live lives that substantiate our claims, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
