Philemon 1:15-16
(15) Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— (16) no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.
Letter to Philemon by Apostle Paul is one of those passionate letters in scripture. Apostle Paul appeals to Philemon to forgive Onesimus. Onesimus was a slave to Philemon and he stole things and ran away. He deserved a punishment even death. While on the run, Onesimus met Apostle Paul and he got converted to Christianity and even committed to serving God. Paul writes this book to convince Philemon to forgive Onesimus and treat him as a brother in faith.
In his appeal to Philemon, Apostle Paul makes a powerful statement in our text today. He says that perhaps the reason why God allowed Onesimus into that situation was for the long-term good. He was a slave but now he will be a fellow brother and minister of the gospel. Philemon lost the slave and gained a fellow minister of the gospel. Sometimes God allows us to lose the good so that we may gain the best!
When we deal with losses, we must be prayerful and understand that it is possible God wants us to lose the good we are so used to in order to gain the best that we know nothing about. The good we are used to seems like the best but it is not. The good we are used to maybe so dear and we do not want it to change. But God is His wisdom allows us to lose the good so that we may gain the best!
A good job may be so dear that losing it causes heartbreak. A relationship may be so heavenly that losing it is a near-death experience. A loved one may be so close to us that when they die or reject us it is like a part of us dies. Properties and items of sentimental value may hold a high value for us that losing the leaves us with long-lasting trauma. Yet when God allows these things to happen, He knows they are good but wants the best to replace them. If we trust Him, we will heal faster and enjoy the higher ground He has lifted us to. Sometimes He lets us lose the good so that we can gain the best!
The good and the best cannot live together. One must go. God in His wisdom allows the good that we are so used to and seriously value, to go. Then God allows the best that we know nothing about to sneak in or surprise us and when we look back we are grateful. Sometimes we lose the good to gain the best!
May God help us, to deal with losses wisely, and may it be that the good is going so that the best can come, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
