Proverbs 7:21 – With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk.
You respond differently to different temptations. Some temptations, you listen as Jesus did, then you affirm your position in God’s will and walk away unscathed. But for this one, if you stop to listen you have accepted it! This temptation is different from others, treat it differently.
Proverbs chapter seven emphasizes the need for wisdom. Solomon writes that wisdom is so good it will even keep you off from adultery. Then Solomon narrates that he saw a young man walking down the street. He saw a prostitute following the young man. He saw the young man stopping to listen to the prostitute. The story ends by telling us that with persuasive words she won him and led him astray to what could cost his life.
When you read the story, you will notice that the mistake the young man made was to stop and listen. He shouldn’t have stopped. He shouldn’t have listened. If you stop and listen, you have been conquered.
He listened as the prostitute described how ready her house is for him. He listened as the prostitute described how they will have a nice time. He listened as the prostitute assuaged his fears of being caught by confirming that her husband won’t be returning soon. The story concludes by saying he got persuaded and followed her. He shouldn’t have listened! If you stop to listen you are conquered and defeated.
If you can chat on this one you are finished. If you let him or her paint a seductive picture in your mind, you are finished. If you stop to listen to the sweet promises associated with sexual immorality, you are finished. Proverbs chapter seven tells us that the young man lost it when he stopped to listen.
What have you stopped to listen to? What calls are you receiving? What flirting are you entertaining? What chats are you enjoying? For temptations on sexual immorality, when you stop to listen, you are defeated!
Once you accept the light note jokes. The suggestive word here or there. The ideally indecent touch here or there. The secret communication here and there. The naughty once in a while jokes. You like the young man of Proverbs seven have stopped to listen, and that is the worst mistake of your life. For this kind of temptations, when you stop to listen and let it go on, you have compromised, you are defeated!
James 4:7 – Submit yourselves, then, to God. RESIST the devil, and he will flee from you.
The Bible advises that we should resist such advances. Resist such communication. Resist such jokes. Resist such moves and touch. Resist such calls and chats. Resist the entire topic and person. If you don’t resist and choose to stop and listen, you will have yielded to the temptation. Resist!
1 Corinthians 6:18 – FLEE from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
The Bible also teaches that we should flee. Run out as we run for our lives. Run like you are running from a burning house. Run like you are being chased by a deranged armed person. That is what it means to flee from such temptations. The young man in Proverbs seven did not flee, instead he stopped to listen. If you stop to listen, you are already conquered and defeated!
May God save us if we had stopped. May God give us wisdom and courage to resist today and flee today without excuses and delay. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
