Psalms 7:11 – God is a righteous judge,
a God who displays his wrath every day.
David prays and laments about an enemy who is unfairly pursuing him. When King Saul also referred to as Cush which is his father’s name, is pursuing to kill David, David prays this prayer in this chapter. He pleads with God to intervene and judge between him and Saul.
Then David comes to the conclusion we all should come to when waiting for God’s justice. David concludes and declares that God is a righteous judge. David affirms his faith by declaring that God is a righteous judge. David ends his prayer of desperation for divine justice by assuring himself and his sympathizers that God is a righteous judge.
We have made our case through prayer. Gods has heard us. God has not answered yet. But we have nothing to worry about because God is a righteous judge. God has heard our cry and though He hasn’t responded yet, we know justice will be done, because, God is a righteous judge.
Righteous means honest. Righteous means fair. Righteous means He doesn’t make mistakes. Righteous means there is no chance of a guilty person going free and an innocent person being punished. Righteous means both parties, the offender and offended will be treated as they deserve. Righteous means He will not delay until justice is denied, He will act on time. Isn’t it good news to know that God is a righteous judge?
Genesis 18:25 – Far be it from you to do such a thing —to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Abraham declares that God is a righteous judge. Abraham was worried that if God destroys Sodom, will He destroy the righteous and the wicked? Then Abraham came to this great conclusion that God is a righteous judge. When God punishes Sodom, Abraham believes that as a righteous judge no evil person will escape and no righteous person will suffer. God is a righteous judge!
Take notice that in both cases, Abraham and David didn’t know the outcome of God’s judgement. They didn’t know how God will make decisions and treat the people in question. Because they didn’t know what God will do, they comforted themselves in this eternal truth that is sufficient to answer all questions of this kind, that God is a righteous judge!
Like Abraham and David we don’t know how God will judge infants who died. Infants too young to know anything. Infants too young to choose right and wrong. Will these infants end up in heaven or hell? Like Abraham and David we don’t know and can’t force God to save them or punish them, but what we know is, God is a righteous judge. The final destiny of the infants shouldn’t worry us, as the final destiny of righteous people in Sodom didn’t worry Abraham. It’s enough to declare as Abraham did that God will act fairly finally. God is a righteous judge!
We should not force scriptures to say what hasn’t been written. Let us arrive at that safe and assuring conclusion that the judge of the universe will not make mistakes. God is a righteous judge!
How will God judge mad people. Who did wrong because of mental health issues. People who killed others or hurt others or committed sin, while mentally unwell? Some even committed suicide in the height of their mental illness. Surely, what they did wasn’t right, but they were not mentally normal? Will God punish them as if they knew what they were doing? When we don’t know how God will judge, we conclude as Abraham and David concluded when they didn’t know how God will judge. Their conclusion and ours therefore is, God will not make mistakes we can trust Him, for God is a righteous judge!
Genesis 20:5 – Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister, ’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands. ”
Genesis 20:6 – Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Abimelek unintentionally took Sarah to marry her. He didn’t know Sarah was Abraham’s wife. Abraham lied to him. Abimelek was innocent. How will God judge people who unintentionally did wrong things? God tells Abimelek that I know you are innocent and acted unintentionally. God knows when the act is unintentional. God tells Abimelek that because he was innocent, God prevented him from touching Sarah. God treated Abimelek fairly. This is because God is a righteous judge!
If you have made decisions that have hurt people unintentionally, God is a righteous judge. But if it was intentional, unless you repent, no amount of politics will save you from God’s wrath. God will treat you as you deserve. For God is a righteous judge. If it was intentional or unintentional, God will not make mistakes. God is a righteous judge!
The point is, there are things about God’s judgement we don’t know and we are concerned about. Let us do what Abraham and David did in that same situation, they trusted that God will not make mistakes. They concluded and declared that God is a righteous judge!
I repent my sins. I won’t revenge against my enemies because God the righteous judge will at the right time treat them as they deserve. I am calm and full of assurance that the fate of those who died in infancy, those who died with mental illness and those who acted innocently, will be satisfying, because God is a righteous judge! May the righteousness of God’s judgement instruct us and comfort us, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
