1 Timothy 3:15
if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
Apostle Paul writes this letter to Timothy a Pastor in Ephesus. He opens to visit and give further Christian guidance to the church. However, there is a matter that can’t wait for that visit. This matter has to be addressed now as we wait for the physical visit. It is a matter that is urgent and a priority to all worshippers.
This is the matter that caused Apostle Paul to write this letter to Timothy. In our text today he explains that, Incase he is delayed he has written this letter to address what can’t wait. To address what would go wrong if not addressed immediately. To address a matter that should be given priority by the church leaders and each member. It is urgent and a priority!
Paul tells Timothy in our text today that I am writing so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s house. Conduct themselves has also been translated as behave themselves. When he says, people, he is using a widely inclusive term. The laid down conduct or code of behaviour affects everybody. Leaders and lay people must adhere to this code of behaviour in God’s household. Visitors and local church members are bound by this code of conduct. How people behave in God’s household is an urgent matter and a priority!
The conduct being recommended is for God’s household and not just God’s house. It is a conduct affecting family members. A conduct expected of everyone who subscribes to this faith. If it was a conduct for God’s house, it would be a code of conduct of how to behave in worship only. A conduct of God’s household means whoever belongs to this family must now behave in this manner whether at home or away. This is therefore a reference to lifestyle. It is urgent and a priority!
If you belong to the church then this is your code of conduct. Belonging to a church is a serious matter. This is because the church belongs to a living God. Our conduct must exemplify a living God. The church is also a pillar and foundation of truth. A supporting base of all truth taught. Therefore its church members must be people of high integrity with a prescribed conduct. This is urgent and a priority!
Anyone who even suggests remotely that conduct is not a significant matter is a person with a narrow view of things. Conduct is very important, it caused the Apostle to write to ensure that his delay does not cause the church to have an unclear view of their conduct. It’s urgent and a priority!
The letter to Timothy and letters to other churches are all about how we ought to conduct ourselves as members of God’s family. The entire scriptures are about how we ought to conduct ourselves as believers of the one God of the Bible. Conduct is the main agenda, its urgent and a priority!
Conduct includes reverence at the place of worship. Our modern day cause of irreverence is our access to internet and phones that distract us from worship. We also get to be irreverent when we distract worshippers and they get distracted because of our dress and actions. Irreverence comes about also when we casually treat the clergy and carelessly confront them. We need to work on our conduct on reverence at worship. It is urgent and a priority!
Conduct includes how we deal with family members, neighbours and other people we meet in our day to day life. Conduct includes our responsibility to the unfortunate in society. Conduct includes how to resolve conflicts. Conduct includes how we treat each other in the working space. Conduct covers dressing and food. Conduct includes how responsible we are to do church work. Conduct includes private affairs between us and others unrelated to the church. Conduct is about an entire lifestyle. It is urgent and a priority!
If our lifestyle doesn’t match our profession of faith, we will never win anyone to Christ. Conduct is a critical aspect of Christian life. May God grant us His Spirit to mould our conduct and guide us, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
