1 Thessalonians 3:12
May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
Contemporary English Version
May the Lord make your love for each other and for everyone else grow by leaps and bounds. This is how our love for you has grown.
Apostle Paul expresses his concern, comfort, and love for the people in the church of the Thessalonians. Then in our text today he tells them that his wish and prayer is that God makes or causes their love to increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else. He even ends by saying that, that is how their (Paul and companions) love for Thessalonians has grown. What Paul is telling us in this inspired passage is that God can make your love grow!
Thessalonians had done everything within their ability to show love and support for Paul and other preachers. Thessalonians were at their best and probably couldn’t do anything beyond that. Thessalonians had expressed their love in the best way they knew how to. Then Paul tells them that the only way to go beyond that human achievement is to ask God to make their love grow. God can make your love grow!
The human ability to love and express love can be challenged and weakened by time and sinful tendencies of greed and selfishness. We demand too much love that others can’t humanly offer. We demand excess attention, we end up overwhelming our partner with our expectations. We selfishly avail ourselves and exhaust the patience of our partner. Human love eventually gets challenged and grows weak. God can make your love grow!
Sometimes traumatic experiences make us unable to love again. Sometimes too many failed attempts to resuscitate love eventually leave us resigned from love. Sometimes the object of love has also become the source of pain. Many times love weakens and dies as we watch since we no longer have the willingness, strength, ability, and capacity to love anyone anymore. God can make your love grow!
Others can love us less and less. People we expect to love us can over time lose interest in us. We blame them but we know we are the cause. Deep within us, we wish for a reigniting of love again. How can we restore lost love? How do we go back to where we are? God can make your love grow!
Sometimes you reach the peak of love like the Thessalonians. You are at a peak until the peak gets boring. How do you go past the peak of love and excitement for each other? God can make your love grow!
Love is not just in intimate relationships. Paul was addressing love in the church. The love between leaders and members. The love between members themselves. Love from members to non-members. These love types can weaken and die. God can make your love grow!
Love from and to your customers. Love for and from clients. Love for and from fans. Love for and from voters. Love among neighbors and relatives. Whatever love can weaken and die, or get to a human climax that it can’t go beyond. God can make your love grow!
God is not just the creator and author of love, He is love, 1 John 4:8. No one else can deal with love issues like God. No witch can restore love. No psychological gimmicks can guarantee a total growth or restoration of love. No love language can guarantee the growth and restoration of love. Only God is the true love Doctor. God can make your love grow!
Dear God, into your holy hands do I commit my love relationship(s). May my love for and from others grow and overflow to your own glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
