We live in a sinful world and many things go wrong. We experience disappointments and discouragements. Sometimes we feel like giving up. We feel like life is not worth living.
There are times we have very high expectations, but life happens and we are crashed in the pain of defeat. The world around us turns dark and tasteless. We are tired and discouraged.
Sometimes we face rejection by loved ones. People we invested everything emotional in, walk away as if it meant nothing. We are left emotionally depleted and frail. We are too tired to think of starting again. The end of everything becomes so enticing and we are tempted to call it a day for our entire existence.
2 Corinthians 7:5 – For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn —conflicts on the outside, fears within.
Apostle Paul and colleagues faced such difficult and discouraging times as they went about preaching. Even gospel church work can be so stressful and even depressing. Yes, you can get discouraged while working for God in church. The same stress we face out there when working elsewhere, is the same stress you meet when you work in church.
Apostle Paul tells us that they suffered without rest. Problem after problem. Harassed, never at ease, no comfort, nothing working well. Everything going haywire. They had conflicts coming from outside constantly, but they also had fears building up within the group and within each individual. It was tough discouraging and depressing time.
Those who serve God are not necessarily having it easy. They are suffering like everyone else. We all have the same enemy, the devil. The enemy attacks us whether we are in government service or church service. We are not alone, we are all suffering.
It is a world of suffering and trouble. Expect it and hang in there, do not give up, it shall come to pass. Problems will come and go, then come again, then go and then come again. That is our portion, and we accept it. Yet there is good news!
As Paul and company were going through hell on earth, God send Titus to go and comfort them. The arrival of Titus brought healing. Apostle Paul acknowledges that it is God who sent Titus to comfort them, because God is in the business of comforting us.
God knows what we go through and He engages in the business of comforting us. Sending money at the right time to comfort us. Sending people at the right time to comfort us. Changing situations at the right time to comfort us. Sending sermons and preachers at the right time to comfort us.
May God comfort you and me today. May God send the appropriate comfort to us today. May God make us a comfort to someone else today. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
