Deuteronomy 5:28-29
(28) The LORD heard you when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. (29) Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!
Moses interacted with God and the Israelites. Moses brought God’s message to the Israelites. Israelites trusted Moses even without seeing or hearing from God. Israelites saw the miraculous signs that God performed under Moses and they believed that Moses was in connection with God.
One day, God decided to visit the Israelites and speak to them Himself. The Israelites were excited and anxious. In preparation to gather together and hear from God, they had to bathe and do a thorough cleaning in their areas. Israelites were given three full days to prepare for an appointment with God. Boundaries were placed around Mount Sinai where God would come down to speak to His people so that no one crosses and gets killed for irreverence.
Eventually, God came down. The mountain was covered in dark clouds. There was an earthquake thunder and lightning. The moment was scary. Then God spoke and He spoke the Ten Commandments. It was a memorable yet scary moment. Then God ended His speech and the Israelites had something to say to Moses.
Israelites told Moses that if God continues to speak to them they would be consumed by fire, Deuteronomy 5:25. They feared that sinful human beings should not hear the voice of God and survive Exodus 5:26. They were afraid that if they keep listening to God then they will get consumed and die.
Deuteronomy 5:27
Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then tell us whatever the LORD our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”
Israelites told Moses that he should be listening to God and telling them what God has said. If God speaks Himself they will die. They pleaded with Moses to listen to God in his privacy and then let them know what he said. They declared that it was advantageous if they only got reports of God’s words.
It is in response to these that God reacted by telling Moses that He knows what these people are saying. It is good to know that even when we have private conversations, God is listening. God tells Moses that you do not have to report what the people are saying to Him. I have heard what these people said to you!
When people speak harshly to you. When people demean you. When people castigate you. When people hurt you with words. God has a message for you today. I have heard what these people said to you!
When people adore you. When people praise you. When people speak well about you. When people affirm you. When people encourage you. God has this to say to you. I have heard what these people said to you!
May we be comforted, warned, and encouraged that we have a God who is ever listening to what we say to others and what others say to us, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
