Romans 2:5
But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
We store things for future use. What we store will accumulate and serve us in the future. Food safety is in having sufficient food reserves. Financial security is not just in having immovable property but also in having easily accessed cash that can be used when the need arises. When the need arises there may be no time to sell land or houses or cars to have cash. There is a need to also accumulate some cash. Store up some cash. What are you storing up for yourself?
The future will be a future when we will be older. In the future, we will have families and children who will need more money and resources than we have today as single people. If as a single person you are accumulating electronic gadgets, furniture, etc., these things depreciate. Is that all you are storing up for the future? Will depreciated furniture and electronics be useful when you have a family and children with demands? What are you storing up for yourself?
In the future children will be in more costly and demanding schools. What are you storing up for yourself? In the future, we may lose our jobs or businesses suddenly. What are you storing up for yourself? In the future, we may get sick and need costly medical care. What are you storing up for yourself? In the future, we will retire and eventually leave the company property behind and move to our own if we have. What are you storing up for yourself?
Without your spouse in the future for one reason or another, what is your plan? Without parents in the future for one reason or another, what is your plan? Without the current income in the future, what is your plan? Waiting to cross that bridge when you get there is not a very clever idea. What are you storing up for yourself?
Apostle Paul tells the church in Rome that those who defy God and offend others are storing up wrath from God for themselves. They may seem to be cushioned from punishment and nothing may seem to hinder their evil schemes and execution, but, they are storing up God’s anger against themselves. Whatever evil you enjoy or get used to and can explain why you are right in doing that evil, it is just storing up God’s anger against you in the future. Retaliation from God may delay but it is accumulating and it will come for sure. Daily you are contributing to it. What are you storing up for yourself?
Romans 2:7-11
(7) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. (8) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. (9) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; (10) but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. (11) For God does not show favoritism.
If you do the right things. If you do God’s will. If you treat those who are around you well. If you trust God and depend on Him. You will be storing up in heaven eternal life and happiness. You can store up happiness and eternal life. You can store up curses and eternal punishment. What are you storing up for yourself?
The future is real. If you don’t store up something for the immediate future and distant future, you are storing up regrets and misery. Regrets and misery may console you but will not change your situation at that time. It may not attract sympathy nor free things from well-wishers. What are you storing up for yourself?
The future is real. The future doesn’t just require money and a good education. The future doesn’t just require great relationships and perfect health. The future also needs God who steps in to cover our deficiencies. As you plan for the future, God should be in the picture. Store up something for your relationship with God. What are you storing up for yourself?
Luke 12:21
“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
A future without God is guaranteed disaster and distress. We can be rich, but rich without God is being a rich fool who will have a bad ending. Are you storing up something in your relationship with God? Storing up is daily. Are you daily preparing for the future and your relationship with God? What are you storing up for yourself?
Dear God, I am running late in my storing up the right things. Forgive the evil I have stored up. Help me to store up for a good future and my relationship with You my God. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
