Acts 9:4-5 (NIV) – 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, WHY DO YOU PERSECUTE ME?” 5 “WHO ARE YOU, LORD?” Saul asked. “I AM JESUS, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.
Saul was a fierce critic and fighter of Christianity at its inception. Saul was determined to single-handedly put an end to Christianity. Saul led in persecuting Christianity. Even at his own cost, he went from city to city, village to village, imprisoning and killing Christians. No body could stop Saul. He was unstoppable.
We need to be careful when we think we are unstoppable. When we think we are invincible. When we think we are safe online and no one can know who we are and even reach us to make us accountable. Saul felt unstoppable and he left for Damascus to persecute more Christians.
It may be true that you are unstoppable because the Church, its leaders and members can’t do anything to you. The law is on your side to freely express yourself. No one can stop you and you are enjoying that privilege. That is exactly the situation that Saul was in. Unstoppable while persecuting.
Saul also felt he was right. He was sure he was right. He was serving God by persecuting the church. We too sometimes feel we are right. Like Saul we are fighting evil and evil people in the church. We are sure we are right. Saul was sure he was right. In addition to being unstoppable.
Proverbs 14:12 (NIV) – There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 16:25 (NIV) – There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
There is a way that seems right to a person but in the end it leads to destruction. We need to double check when we are too sure that we are right. We may not be right. Saul thought he was right but he was not. He thought he was unstoppable but he was not!
Acts 9:3-4 (NIV) – 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
The unstoppable was stopped. When the church couldn’t stop him, God stopped him. When the church leaders and members couldn’t do anything to Saul, God did it. He who couldn’t be stopped was stopped.
God watched Saul persecute the church. God didn’t act immediately, He watched first then He acted. God is watching all of us. The unstoppable amongst us will soon be stopped. The chief bully online will soon disappear and stop posting stuff. God is watching and at the peak of your popularity online, bullying and harassing anyone and everyone including the church, He will stop you.
Saul was stopped! A light shone from heaven, and Jesus demanded to know why Saul was persecuting Him. At that moment all the justification Saul had disappeared. The fans who were cheering him and escorting him vanished in silence. He had no response. We may think we have support from people, we may think we have arguments in our favor, until God corners us, and we are finished!
When we bully and harass people online and elsewhere, we should take note that they belong to God. We may be unstoppable for now, but soon, God will stop us for good. The people we harass and attack anonymously and directly are all God’s people. The people who seem helpless around us and are stranded with us, are God’s people. We will be stopped by the ultimate Stopper, God Himself!
You have an online account from where you bully people with justification to do so? You will be stopped. You are a boss bullying workers at work? You will be stopped. You bully domestic workers and needy people? You will be stopped. Orphans are suffering under you and you swear they will go no where unless you allow it? You will be stopped. Are you domestically abusing your spouse, children or parents? You will be stopped!
Matthew 25:40 (NIV) – “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, WHATEVER YOU DID for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:45 (NIV) – “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, WHATEVER YOU DID NOT do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
Whatever you did or did not do to the least of these, you did or did not do it to God. How we treat people is eventually a treatment of God. How we handle people is how we are handling God.
1 John 4:20 (NIV) – Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.
You cannot handle God differently and people differently. How you handle people is how you are handling God. Handle people with care. You can’t be good to God and bad to people. You can’t love a God you haven’t seen and be hard on people you see.
All people belong to God. Anyone we harass and bully belongs to God. They may be helpless and we can’t be stopped, but their Creator, their God is watching. At the height of our success in bullying, He will stop us. When we persecute anyone, we are persecuting God.
When we bully anyone, we are bullying God. When we make life hard for anyone, we are making life hard for God. When we cause anyone to cry, we are causing God to cry. When we silence people online with hurtful words, we are silencing God with hurtful words. At the least unexpected moment, God will stop us from harassing Him and His people.
May God open our eyes to see how and where we have been bullies. May God help us to stop before He stops us. May God give patience to those who are being bullied. May those suffering know that help is on the way. In Jesus name, Amen!
