2 Chronicles 1:11
God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king,
2 Chronicles 1:12
therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have. ”
Solomon was now King of Israel after David. God appears to Solomon in a dream and asks him what he wants God to grant him. Solomon tells God that his assignment as a king is too heavy and he needs the wisdom to lead God’s people. Then God in the words of our text today expresses what seems like a surprise and admiration of Solomon because his request had correct priorities. God then blesses Solomon beyond his request and wildest imagination. What made a difference are his priorities!
Solomon only asked for wisdom to lead God’s people. God grants Solomon wealth, possessions, honor, and excellence that no one else in the past, present, and future will ever have. God gives Solomon what he asked for and also what he didn’t ask for. Solomon excels everybody else because of God’s blessings. What made a difference are his priorities!
God tells Solomon and almost insinuates that other people would have prioritized asking for wealth, possessions, honor, death of their enemies, and long life. God tells Solomon that there are bad priorities and good priorities. God tells Solomon that He is responding to his priorities. God is impressed at what he did not prioritize. What made a difference are his priorities!
Solomon prayed as everybody prays, but what made a difference was the priority. God listened to Solomon as He listens to all of us, but what made a difference is his priority. God assessed Solomon’s request and future prospect as He assesses all our requests, but what made a difference was his priority. What made a difference are his priorities!
When you last prayed earnestly what were your priorities? When you fasted and prayed what were your priorities? When you solicited prayers, what were your priorities? When you attend worship what priorities drive you? When you miss certain events in worship and attend to others, what are your priorities? If God assessed your priorities would He bless you as He blessed Solomon? What made a difference are his priorities!
Asking for wealth is not a bad thing, but making it a priority over your need to overcome erratic attendance of worship is the problem. Asking for possession is in order, in fact, God gave it to Solomon. Honor has no problem. The problem is if you want to honor at the expense of the welfare of others by hurting them. There are things with eternal value and there are things with temporal value. God gives both but He expects us to prioritize things with eternal value. Eternal value first, that is our salvation. The welfare of others second. Our temporal needs third. What made a difference are his priorities!
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Priority must be given to your salvation. Not briefly and casually to get done with it then you now get into the serious requests of temporal things. God wants us to seek salvation with all our hearts and energies. Once salvation is made a priority, God provides all other things we need. We can’t fool God that we have prioritized salvation yet we are faking it hoping he doesn’t notice then He gives us wealth, possessions, honor, etc. You can’t fool God. The search and desire for salvation and the welfare of others must be real and a key priority. What made a difference are his priorities!
In life, we need priorities in order to succeed. A student must make studies their priority. What are your financial priorities that inform your investments, savings, and spending? What priorities inform how you relate with people? What are your priorities? Write them down and recite them and regularly review them. They do not come naturally, you must deliberately develop them. If you want to change your life or review your performance at anything, then relook your priorities. What are your priorities? What made a difference are his priorities!
Dear God, the problem has been and still is my priorities are not right. I can’t help it, help me have the right priorities, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
