1 Chronicles 2:3
Er, Onan and Shelah. These three were born to him by a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua. Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death.
1 Chronicles 2:7
The son of Karmi:
Achar, who brought trouble on Israel by violating the ban on taking devoted things.
1 Chronicles 2:22-23
(22) Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three towns in Gilead. (23) (But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth Jair, as well as Kenath with its surrounding settlements—sixty towns.) All these were descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.
There is a genealogy in this chapter of the Bible. Genealogy is a study of family relationships. Genealogy is designed to establish legit info persons named in the family tree. Genealogy can be boring to read particularly if you don’t know what to look for in a genealogy.
Genealogies come with quick summaries that help us identify certain persons. Many names are just listed in genealogies. But some names need some explanation either to be understood, identified, or engrave certain acts of their lives. Look at the following note from the genealogy Jesus.
Matthew 1:6
and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,
The writer of the genealogy does not want it to be ever forgotten that Solomon was the son of a woman who David snatched from Uriah and killed him. A sad story that the writer doesn’t want to be forgotten. That story shows how gracious God is. That from such an evil act that later on God forgave, the sinners became great grandparents of Jesus. Isn’t it grace?
Therefore genealogies have notes sometimes attached to certain names. The genealogy in our main text today has many names just listed. But some names highlighted above have notes.
We are told in the notes that Er was wicked before the LORD and God killed him. What a note to remember a person for! We also have a note associated with Achar aka Achan. Achan brought trouble to Israel by stealing devoted things. What do you think about such a note attached to your name permanently?
We are also told about the sons of Makir who controlled twenty-three towns and another one sixty towns. To control could refer to military control. To control could refer to election as a leader. To control could refer could mean they created the towns and now they were under you. Whatever this means, this is no mean achievement. That is why a note was attached to the names.
When others do write their story and they come across your name, what note will they add to it? What note will your children, spouse, and domestic workers add to your name if they were to come across it? Would it be a note of bitterness, joy, gratefulness, or warning people to never fall for people like you? What note will your closest relatives and friends add to your name?
What note will your colleagues at work and business partners add to your name? What note will your clients add to your name? What note defines your interactions?
When a story of leadership is written and your leadership is reviewed, what note will they write? What note will neighbors write? What note?
Some names have no note, they were just there. Some names have good notes. Some names have terrible notes attached to them. What note will be attached to your name, when stories of life are written? How will your name appear? With a note? Which note? Or no notes?
May God’s grace grant us good notes whenever stories are written about us, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
