1 Corinthians 6:19 – Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN;
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? YOU DO NOT BELONG TO YOURSELF, (New Living Translation)
You are not your own – let that message sink in. You are not your own – think about what that means. You are not your own – repeat those words to yourself. You are not your own!
These words are spoken in the context of dissuading believers from sexual immorality. In case you defend your sexual orientation and practices by claiming it’s your body and it’s your life, the Apostle has an answer for you. You are not your own!
Your sexual orientation and practices are not dictated by your feelings and wishes. You are not your own. God owns you and God can make demands from you contrary to your feelings and wishes, and you must comply, because, you are not your own!
You may have been born feeling one thing yet you are another. You may feel like exploring the variety of sexual menu availed by society whose slogan is freedom and liberty. But God says you have no right to change His commands based on your feelings and opinion. You are not your own!
Did someone just talk of human rights? The answer is, you are not your own. If you are not your own then your rights are subservient to those of He who owns you. In other words God comes first, you and your rights are secondary and relevant only to the extent you don’t contradict God’s will.
Martyrs are a demonstration that you are not your own. They died because defying God’s will was not an option. They chose to die for God than live for themselves, because they knew they don’t belong to themselves.
Abraham was willing to sacrifice the only child he had and loved. Did his opinion matter? No! What God wants is final. You are not your own.
When we listen to God’s word, we don’t ask if it is sensible or reasonable. When we listen to God’s word, we only establish if that is what the Bible really says, and we live according to it. We do what God wants. You do what God wants. You are not your own!
When God says abstain, you abstain. It doesn’t matter if nobody has ever been able to abstain, you abstain. It may suck, it may be insane, but we obey God. You are not your own!
When God places restrictions on dressing, you comply. When God demands tithes and offerings you give. When God calls you to preach, you preach. Paul had no option, and he cried out, “woe unto me if I don’t preach (1 Corinthians 9:16).” You are not your own, obey your Master!
So far that sounds negative and even offensive to others. There is a positive side to this powerful statement that we are not our own. The positive side is that since I am not my own, the owner takes responsibility of me.
Since I am not my own, God is my Shepherd I shall not want. Since I am not my own, He who owns me knows even the number of hair on my head. Since I am not my own, He who cares if a sparrow falls will watch over me much more.
Since I am not my own, I will fear no evil as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death with the owner. Since I am not my own, I can say what the three Hebrew boys told Nebuchadnezzar, that God can save us, and even if He doesn’t save us, we won’t worship your gods. They told Nebuchadnezzar that they are not their own and God will decide what happens and they are okay with it.
Since Peter knew this, he fell deep asleep the night before he was to be beheaded. Why worry about dying tomorrow when you are not your own. God send an Angel and rescued Peter from Prison. Isn’t this good news when you let God own you? You are not your own!
When you threaten my life and I almost believe you, I remind myself that I am not my own and my owner will deal with you. Did anyone threaten your job? You are not your own. Are you lonely and advancing in age? You are not your own. Are you sickly and afraid of the prognosis? You are not your own. Isn’t it good news that in great difficulties our owner takes over what we can’t do? You are not your own.
Don’t revenge when offended. You are revenging as who? You are not your own! Let the owner of you address that offense. You are not your own!
Don’t harm anyone because unknowingly you may be dealing with their owner. They are not their own. Handle people with care. Their owner is powerful and unstoppable.
May these words teach us and inspire us. You are not your own. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
