Zechariah 6:5 – The angel answered me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going out from standing in the presence of the Lord of the whole world.
Zechariah 6:7 – When the powerful horses went out, they were straining to go throughout the earth. And he said, “Go throughout the earth!” So they went throughout the earth.
Zechariah 6:8 – Then he called to me, “Look, those going toward the north country have given my Spirit rest in the land of the north.”
Zechariah chapter six has a two part prophecy. The first part has to do with four chariots drawn by horses of different colors going around the world. The second has to do with Joshua the High Priest and rebuilding of the temple. Our focus today is on the chariots.
There is another prophecy about horses in Revelation chapter six. The difference is that Revelation addresses end of the world events. Zechariah addresses end of Babylonian captivity events. The horse colors may have a similar interpretation but the events and times being addressed are not the same. It would be wrong to force Zechariah six to address same time as Revelation six.
When Zechariah asks the Angel to interpret the vision he gets an answer. These chariots are agencies of heaven, employed to ensure God’s will is done. They come after a time of prolonged chaos by Assyrians and mainly Babylonians. God sends them to patrol the world to ensure His will is done and calm restored.
Revelation seven (Revelation 7:1-3) tells us about four Angels holding the four corners of the world to ensure nothing goes wrong. Zechariah six tells us about four chariots going in four major directions of the world to ensure nothing goes wrong. Therefore we gladly conclude that in the past of Zechariah’s time and in the present time that we live in and depicted by Revelation seven, we are in the safety of God’s patrolling agents.
The two bronze mountains where the chariots come from depict the time of these events. Bronze Kingdom according to the book of Daniel two and seven is the Greek kingdom. God intervenes at a time when Persians are exiting and Greek’s are coming in as the then superpowers. The point is, at that time God’s agencies were sent to patrol the world.
The red horses indicate bloodshed. The black horses indicate famine and suffering. The white horses signify peace. The multiple colored horses signify a myriad of circumstances. All these means that God will establish His Will on earth under any and all circumstances. God’s will will be done for those in bloodshed circumstances, for those in famine and suffering circumstances, for those in peaceful circumstances, and for many of us today in a myriad of multiple circumstances. God’s will must be done. The patrolling agencies are working on it.
North represents Babylon. The patrolling divine agencies silenced the powerful Babylon. It seemed like Babylon could not be defeated but they were defeated. While on the surface it seems like Babylon was defeated by Medo-Persians, we now learn that it was the work of divine agencies patrolling the world.
2 Chronicles 16:9 – For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war. ”
Proverbs 15:3 – The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
These verses were our favorite with my sisters as we grew up. We were afraid of darkness and our parents made us recite these verses to dispel fear particularly at night. We were glad to recite and know that even in pitch darkness God’s eyes are everywhere to ensure our safety.
I am told that those who fear darkness are very creative and imagine many things that could lurk in the dark. Creativity is good, but in addition to imagining the fearful things, we were to imagine a powerful God patrolling our home and rooms at night. Knowing that God is patrolling is comforting.
We are not alone wherever we are. Whatever the circumstances, God has agencies patrolling the world to ensure His will is done. Whether those agencies are depicted as eyes of God, or angels or even horses, it doesn’t matter. What matters is God is patrolling our world, our homes and our lives to ensure His will is done by all means, whether bloody, hunger, peace or mixed circumstances.
Matthew 6:10 – your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
May God’s will be done for us in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. May divine agencies patrol our lives and daily activities. May we be comforted to know that we have divine agencies patrolling around us to implement God’s will. We are safe because God is patrolling. Amen!

In a world full of hopelessness and perceived evidence that things are spiraling out of control, I am encouraged and hopeful to read that God is in control of everything that happens. He is watching over me.
Amen
We are safe because God is patrolling!. Amen and Amen.
