Psalms 3:5
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.
New Living Translation

I sleep and wake up refreshed because you, LORD, protect me.
Good News Translation
I lie down and sleep, and all night long the LORD protects me.
This is one of those Bible texts we should all recite. Psalm three is a short Psalm by King David. David wrote this Psalm as he ran away from his son Absalom who had rebelled against him and was trying to overthrow him. David fought so many enemies throughout his life both enemies outside and those from his own house. His life seemed like a dark night. Now he writes a Psalm to explain how he made it through the night!
In the first two verses of this Psalm David speaks to God. He cries about so many enemies that are strewn along his path of life. He tells God that he has so many enemies and many more are rising up against him. He tells God that his enemies have been saying that God will not deliver him. It is indeed a dark night in his life. Now he writes a Psalm to explain how he made it through the night!
In verses, three to six David explains that it is God who has protected him from his enemies. It is God who has seen him through the dark night of his life. God has been a shield around him and not just in front of him as it normally is, Psalm 3:3. God is David’s glory who lifts his head high. In other words, his self-esteem is found in God. While others find self-esteem in possessions, relations, and academic accolades, David finds his self-esteem in God. While some feel a high when they look at the houses they have put up, David finds a high when he thinks of his God.
On what is your self-esteem based? Your pay and ability to purchase? Your savings? Your security? David says that his high, his self-esteem is found in the LORD his God. The most consistent unchallengeable sustainable self-esteem basis is God and God alone, all else will disappoint.
Then David tells us that when he calls on God, God answers him. This is the greatest consolation we have, that God answers our prayers. That when we pray God responds. God intervenes. God listens. God saves. Therefore in verse six, David says that he will not fear whatever happens around him because he has God. In verse seven he pleads with God to arise and save. Then verse eight says that salvation comes from God.
Our text of consideration today is verse five. David says that when night comes when danger looms and risks go high, he lies down and sleeps. With all enemies around him, he affords to sleep. God grants sleep even in circumstances where it would be difficult to sleep. Then he wakes up the next day. How does he make it through the night? God sustains him. God protects him. God watches over him. This is how he made it through the night!
We will make it through the night because God sustains us. We will make it through the night of low finances and high demands because God sustains us. We will make it through the night of broken relationships because God sustains us. We will make it through the night of sickness because God sustains us. We will make it through the night of failures because God sustains us. This is how David made it through the night!
Dear God see me through each night and this night in my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
