Song of Songs 5:9
How is your beloved better than others,
most beautiful of women?
How is your beloved better than others,
that you so charge us?
If you have identified someone as your beloved you need to answer this pertinent question. How is your beloved better than others? What makes your beloved different from others?
The Song of Songs is an inspired book of the Bible. In this book, there is a dialogue between a man and a woman who are in love with each other. Once in a while, the friends interject as they do in our text today.
The lady was sleeping and wishing her man could come over and be with her. The man appears and knocks at the door but the lady delays opening the door or even responding to him. The man tries to open the door for himself but he fails.
When the lady eventually goes to open the door, the man is gone. She gets desperate and rushes out in the dark to look for him. While roaming in the darkness looking for her man, she meets night guards who assault her.
Song of Songs 5:7
The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
They beat me, they bruised me;
they took away my cloak,
those watchmen of the walls!
She pays a bitter price for the delay. She delayed opening the door when her man came. She is now roaming in darkness because of that delay. She has been beaten up and bruised by guards because she was roaming around at night. All these are a price for her delayed response. Delay is dangerous and can be very costly!
Song of Songs 5:8
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you —
if you find my beloved,
what will you tell him?
Tell him I am faint with love.
In her pain and desperation, she calls out to her friends. She pleads with them to express her love to her man if they find him. She probably feels she may die and wishes her beloved one to know that she loves him. She loves the one she delayed opening the door for. Her friends get her message and respond probably from nearby locked houses.
Song of Songs 5:9
How is your beloved better than others,
most beautiful of women?
How is your beloved better than others,
that you so charge us?
They ask her the key question. How is your beloved better than others? Why risk your life for him? Why send us to take this message to him? If he was gone when you opened the door, you should have let him go and you would find another man the next day. Is he different from other men? How is your beloved better than others?
The lady goes ahead to explain how her beloved is better than others. The rest of the chapter is her response to the question. How is your beloved better than others? Song of Songs 5:10-16 is her response praising her man and emphasizing that he is different from other men. He cannot be replaced by any other man.
How is your beloved better than others? This question should be posed to those who wish to marry or get married. They must answer this question before marriage. The answer to this question shows the value placed on the one you love.
Those in marriage need to answer this same question regularly. Those in marriage need to note at what point the answers they had before marriage changed. When answers change and the beloved becomes less and less unique and more and more ordinary or even worse, we should worry. Is it the person who has changed or is it our perception of them that has changed? Or is it both?
We must pray that those we refer to as beloved will remain better than others. We pray that they don’t change and our perception of them will not change. We pray that those in love will remain better than others to each other, in Jesus’s name, Amen!

Wow! A good question to us youths who are dating or searching.. making a choice after knowing that my beloved is better than others is worth./ greatful
but my question pastor is…..should we go to different men/ gentleman so as to proof how they are different from each other.. I find a times it’s difficult to compare and contrast when you haven’t passed the hands of other gens so as to make or leave a lesson.. I dont mean passing through their hands doing evil but interacting with them and checking on their actions aswell…
kindly guide here
Without a relationship with God and the things of God, even the best life with the most fun will end in pain, regret, and disaster. Dear God, help me have a place for you in my life, so that I may not be blinded by pleasure and achievement, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
Thanks pastor, its a wonderful message ,we pray God directs us through that question AMEN
