James 4:11
Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
New Living Translation
Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, …
Contemporary English Version
My friends, don’t say cruel things about others! If you do, or if you condemn others, …
Good News Translation
Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, …,
Someone said talk is cheap. We talk a lot. We make statements we can’t prove. We praise ourselves. Unfortunately, we also speak negatively about others. Yet the Bible gives this command that we should NOT speak negatively about each other.
When chatting among friends and having fun many topics come up. We speak about the government, the economy, the weather, etc. As a variety of topics come up, and discussion goes on, someone may remind you of a friend who betrayed you or a leader you don’t like. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
You could be talking to your relatives and close family members. Then the name of a relative or family member who is troublesome or uncooperative comes up. The name of a successful independent-minded relative who irritates you comes up. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
You may be catching up with colleagues and discussing work-related issues. This could be an official meeting or an informal meeting. This could be a quick visit by someone in your office. When mid-level workers meet they talk about those above them and those below them. When top-level workers meet they talk about those below them. When low-level workers meet they talk about those above them. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
When catching up about neighborhood issues, a topic may eventually focus on certain individuals. The individuals who for some reason we find uncooperative. Individuals we somehow dislike. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
Many times we speak negatively about others to vent out our frustrations about them. We also speak negatively about others to influence others to also dislike them. We are recruiting enemies against them. We also speak negatively about others so that we look good. We speak negatively about others so that they do not get any further favors or support from anyone. We speak negatively about others because we wish to harm them in any way possible. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
James 2:10-11
(10) For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. (11) For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
The Bible expresses this as a command. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another. To defy and break any command is sin. We, therefore, sin when we speak negatively about others. All commands carry the same weight because the source is God. It is God who said do not kill, steal and commit adultery. It is still God who says do not speak negatively about others. If you break one command you have broken all of them!
When catching up after church. Do not speak negatively about one another. When discussing the just-ended meeting. Do not speak negatively about others. When in social meetings. Do not speak negatively about others. When planning strategies to improve the work and placement of people for service. The Bible says to you DO NOT speak negatively about one another!
“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”
May God save us from this common sinful habit. May God enable us to keep this command, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
