Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
Amplified Bible
Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,
Our text today begins by telling us, whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. Whatever you do. It doesn’t matter what it is. It doesn’t matter if you were forced or you like it. It doesn’t matter if the teammates are bad or good. It doesn’t matter whether the boss is nice or not. It doesn’t matter whether the pay is good or bad. It doesn’t matter whether it is domestic chores or a venture that brings income. The text encompasses every possible thing that you can ever think of doing.
Are you doing it as part of a holiday or part of your daily duties? It doesn’t matter. It is whatever you do. Is it schoolwork reading or leisure reading? It doesn’t matter. It is whatever you do. It doesn’t matter whether it is a short-term plan or a long-term plan. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for big money or small money. It doesn’t matter if it is a small client or a big client. It doesn’t matter whether it is a general course or your major area of study. The Bible says, whatever you do!
Whatever you do must be done with all your heart, or heartily, or from the soul, or with your nest efforts. This is what we can simply say as do it passionately. Passionately combines a surge of energy and excitement or fun. Enjoy what you are doing and doing energetically. In simple words, be passionate. Be passionate about everything that you are doing. If you can’t do it passionately don’t do it!
Whatever you do, do it for God and not for human beings. Even if you are serving human beings, they belong to God, therefore you are serving God. Why should we do everything for God? Because of what we do for God we normally should do it passionately. Therefore, the Apostle Paul tells us that do it as passionately as you do it for God. Therefore, when he tells us to do it for God, he is emphasising that it should be done passionately. The point in the entire verse of consideration today is that we should be passionate in everything that we do. If you can’t do it passionately don’t do it!
The focus of the entire passage, Colossians 3:18-25, is instructions for Christian households. In this pericope, Apostle Paul addresses various family members, Wives, husbands, children, Fathers, and slaves. After addressing each specifically, he now tells them that whatever they do in their family roles, they must do it, passionately. Wife duties and husband duties must be done passionately or else we offend God. Children must be passionate about obeying and cooperating with their parents. Fathers represent parenting, therefore, parenting must be done passionately. slaves represent domestic workers. Domestic workers must do their work passionately. Whatever you do, do it passionately. As passionately as you serve God and not human beings. If you can’t do it passionately don’t do it!
The will of God is that whatever we do will be done passionately. Are you passionate as a family member? As a spouse and parent? Are you passionate? Are you passionate about the workplace? Are you passionate about your studies? Are you passionate about religious matters? Laidback is not God’s will. God’s will is passionate existence and participation. Are you passionate about your neighborhood? Are you passionate about health matters? May God grant us passion in everything we do, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
