James 1:9-10
(9) Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. (10) But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.
Finding a balance is ensuring you do not fall to the left or right. While walking on a tight rope, your weight keeps shifting to the left and to the right. If your weight goes left, you respond by applying equal opposite weight to the right, so that you remain at the center. Life is about finding a true balance!
If you don’t find a true balance, you will fall off to the side the weight shifted to. When walking on a tight rope, finding a balance is a continuous activity. You can’t find balance once and settle, you do it continuously. As you walk you keep shifting your weight to the left-hand side and right-hand side. It is continuously done as you walk. Life is about finding a true balance!
To ensure you remain balanced, you may use a long pole for balance or you stretch your hands out to the sides. The pole or stretched-out hands help you to quickly sense which side the weight is shifting to so that you respond to endure balance. That pole or stretched-out hands is prayer, Bible study, and worship attendance. These things if rightfully used it will increase your sensitivity to balance. Life is about finding a true balance!
When walking on a tight rope, you focus on where you are going and you carefully keep walking. If you lose focus and you look away from your destination you fall off. If you stop walking, your imbalance increases, and you fall off. If you walk too fast, you may not be keen on how to balance your ever-shifting weight, therefore you fall off.
In life, you fail when you lose focus. If you lose focus of the aim of your studies, or work, or relationship, you fail. If you start focusing on side issues and lose sight of your destination, you fail. If you stop moving forward in life, it means you have given up doing right and going for your goal, you fail. If you move too fast, you miss important lessons and you fall off. Life is walking on a tight rope. Life is about finding a true balance!
Our text today tells us that if a person is poor, that is one extreme, they should quickly find a balance by thinking of their high and rich position in Jesus Christ. If a person is rich, they should quickly find a balance by thinking of how that wealth can easily disappear and they can die instantly and leave it. Apostle James tells believers to find a balance in life. Do not stay in the extreme of poverty and wealth, react like a tight rope walking person by shifting your weight in the opposite direction. Life is about finding a true balance!
Poverty should not cause you to lose focus. Poverty is not a place to stop and look around. Poverty requires that you keep walking away from it towards the riches God has prepared for us. When the reality of poverty hits, respond by looking at the opposite that Christ has offered. Don’t stop don’t look around keep focus. Life is about finding a true balance!
Wealth and success is not a place to stop, keep walking towards greater success and wealth promised by God. If you stop you fail. Do not look around like Nebuchadnezzar and brag about your wealth, Daniel 4:28-33. Looking around and bragging will cause you to fall. Life is walking on a tight rope. Life is about finding a true balance!
What situation are you in today? Do not fall in that direction, shift weight to the opposite side and find a balance. Are you happy? Find a balance. Are you sad? Find a balance. Avoid extreme settlements because that is where you fail. Find a balance. Life is walking on a tight rope. Life is about finding a true balance!
Find a balance in your pain or else it will depress you and kill you. Pain, failure, and disappointments need an equal opposite reaction. Find a balance. When rejected or betrayed find an opposite balance. If you dwell on one side you may kill yourself and others, therefore find a balance. Religion will help you find a balance. Counseling will help you find a balance. Life is walking on a tight rope. Life is about finding a true balance!
If you are successful and happy, give yourself a reality check that this situation can suddenly change. Do not get lost and think the worst May never happen, find a balance. Without a balance in success and happiness, you will become arrogant and irrational, then failure will suddenly follow. Life is walking on a tight rope. Life is about finding a true balance!
Our faith practice and expression may require an extreme response for it to be a faithful faith. We must fully trust God without balancing it with a lack of trust. We must do what God requires, without balancing it with defiance. What Apostle James is addressing, is not an expression of faith, but responding to the extremes that life brings. Joy, sadness, wealth, poverty, success, failure, etc. These things require balance. Therefore find a balance in life!
Whatever situation you ever find yourself in, find a balance in the name of Jesus, Amen!
