Exodus 1:20
So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.
Exodus 1:21
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
Midwives care for mother and child around childbirth. They assist expectant mothers to give birth and they receive the newborn child. Israelites were slaves in Egypt. The midwives in Egypt were two ladies by the names, Shiphrah and Puah. Pharaoh the king of Egypt was worried about the fast-growing population of Israelites. Pharaoh asked these two midwives to kill Israelite male children as they assisted women to give birth.
The midwives had been going about their work for a long time. It was routine and almost boring. Then this one assignment from Pharaoh came. They had done many assignments on behalf of all sorts of people, but this assignment from the king was the assignment that would make a great difference. This assignment would have led to the deaths of many Hebrew boys or it would crash the king’s strategy to control the Israelite population. This was the assignment, the one assignment. This assignment was to define them by revealing whether they feared the king and preferred his rewards or they would do right and fear God. It was one assignment!
You may have many assignments in life, but someday, one assignment will come that will define you permanently. One assignment that will reveal to you yourself who you really are at the face of trial. You will know whether you are a true believer or a hypocrite. That one assignment will be your opportunity to forever positively change the lives of others or selfishly serve your own interests at the expense of others. One assignment that will forever make a difference!
That one assignment will come unannounced just in the cause of duty. You can’t see it in advance. You will notice it after its consequences unfold. Since that announcement may never be known in advance, we must be faithful. We must remain true. We must uphold the best standards and meet the highest expectations. We must do it as a way of life and not in anticipation of any favors from anyone. Then one day unknown to us when the one assignment shows up, we will work on it routinely but with permanent consequences that we will not regret. We should be faithful at all times. The one assignment is here or is coming!
Exodus 1:17
The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
These midwives made a decision that they will not obey the king but would instead obey God who forbids such a heinous mass murder of baby boys. This was one decision. They had made many decisions in life, but this one right decision pushed them to the fame of appearing in the holy record in scripture. This one decision saved many lives. This one decision saved many families from mourning and funeral pain. This one decision saved the midwives from the guilt of having murdered innocent children. This was the one ultimate decision!
The decision you will make that will make a big difference is a decision that will just happen in the cause of duty. Nothing unusual until its consequences unfold. Since we do not know which decision of the many decisions will be the decision, we must be keen and careful on all decisions that we make. Fear God while making any decision. Do not hurt others while making decisions. Act in the interest of others while making decisions. That one decision will make a difference someday.
As a result of that one assignment and one decision, God was pleased with these midwives. Our key text today tells us that God was kind to the midwives so the people increased. That means childbirth increased. Every childbirth was income to the midwives, so God blessed the midwives by allowing many births that would bring them income. One assignment one decision and everything changed!
Apart from increasing their income, God did something else to these midwives. He protected them from the anger of Pharaoh that would have killed them for disobedience. Now the midwives were on protection from God. One assignment one decision and everything else changed!
The midwives had been unfortunate that they did not have children of their own. The midwives were childless. They had been childless for too long that it is not mentioned as they are introduced to us. However, when God reverses the situation in their favor it is recorded. God acted in favor of the midwives. even without their prayer for a family, God gave them a family of their own. They may have given up on prayer and accepted a lonely life, but because of one assignment and one decision, God was pleased with them. God gave them families. One assignment one decision and everything changed!
God gave them families. They got spouses they did not have. They got children they did not have. They got relatives and friends that they did not have. Everything changed. One assignment one decision and everything changed!
We should treat every assignment as that one assignment. We must treat every decision like that one decision. May God help us to be faithful to Him, to our work, and to others with or without incentive, and may it be that in all we do, we will be ready for the one assignment and one decision that will positively change everything, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
