Zephaniah 2:3
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the LORD’s anger.

In pursuit of peace of mind, happiness and comfort we seek many things. We seek education. We seek approval from others. We seek prosperity. We seek excellence. We seek protection and safety. But are we seeking the right things? Seek these three things first.
Looking around us we worry. We worry because those who found the things we seek do not seem as happy as we expected them to be. It seems the things we seek may not achieve what we want when we find them. We therefore wonder, what should we seek? Seek these three things first.
Zephania the prophet speaking on behalf of God advises us to seek the following three things. First, seek the LORD. Secondly, seek righteousness. Third and lastly in this text, he says to us, seek humility. Seek these three things first.
To seek means you now know what you want. You can’t seek that which you do not know. To seek means to put efforts towards achieving what you want. Seeking is an action. Those seeking are busy in action at work to get what they want. To seek means the results are not obvious and direct, they are instead elusive and the seeker must persevere. To seek is to persevere until the goal is achieved. To seek is to be focused. Focused on that which you want. It takes a disciplined, intelligent, and persistent person to seek anything worthwhile. Seek these three things first.
To seek is to have priorities. You only seek after assessing what is worth the time and effort and thus make priorities. A person with priorities is a person who manages times well. To prioritize means your time is worthwhile. Seeking says a lot about a person than even the finding. You are already rated highly if you seek. Even if you never find what you were seeking, you will be celebrated as a seeker. Therefore have good priorities. Seek these three things first.
Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
First, seek the LORD. Put a value on your relationship with God. In daily choices between the will of God and desires of sin, seek God by choosing to side with God even if it is inconveniencing. Seek the LORD in non-routine committed prayers. Seek the LORD in Bible study routines. Seek the LORD in regular worship attendance. Seek the LORD without ceasing. Seeking the LORD will bring us the greatest blessing. Seek these three things first.
Second, seek righteousness. Seek to be right. Desire to be right. Others desire power over being right and therefore use evil methods. But for you, seek to be right over power. Others seek wealth by all means without caring if they are right or not. For you, seek to be right. It is better to suffer loss and want than being wrong and sinful. Righteousness has to do with being right according to God. You can be right according to 48 laws of power but wrong in the sight of God. You can be right in political theory but wrong by biblical standards. You can be right by local business strategies but hell-bound if tested by heavenly agencies. Seek to be right according to God which is righteousness. This righteousness is achieved by having the Holy Spirit in us and not by our own efforts. Seek these three things first.
Thirdly, seek humility. Be humble. To seek humility is to constantly remind yourself of the need to be humble. Seek humility when you succeed. Seek humility when you are celebrated. Seek humility when you make it in life. Seek humility. Deliberately work towards humility. Control your pride and arrogance. Suppress them so that humility stands out. Be identified as humble. Seek these three things first.
In this life, we need to seek many things, however, seek these three things first. Dear God, help me change my priorities so that among the many things I seek, I will first seek these three things. May I find these three things first and then many others that I seek, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
