Exodus 9:1 (NIV) – Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: “Let my people go, so that they may worship me.”
What does God want from us? What does God expect from us? Why does God bless us?
God sends Moses to lead Israelites out of Egypt. God said He has seen their suffering. God said He has heard their cry. God said He now wants the people out of Egypt. Yet a further reading shows that it wasn’t just about suffering.
When God sends a message to Pharaoh the king of Egypt, God clarifies what He expects from His people. After they are saved from suffering, what should they do? Why is God giving them freedom and blessings?
God tells Pharaoh in our text of consideration today, that He wants the people to go and worship Him. He is setting them free so that they can worship Him. He is giving them their own land, country and kingdom, for only one purpose. So that they can worship Him. All these blessings for this one purpose.
If worship was a one day in a week affair, God would have released His people in a plan that would guarantee them a once in a week freedom. The freedom God grants His children is full round the clock freedom. What for? That they may worship Him. That is why He blessed them!
From God’s perspective therefore, worship is integrated in our entire life. It’s not compartmentalized into devotion time, prayer time, or day of worship. The worshipper is a worshipper throughout. Whatever we do we should be in a worship mode.
Worship mode at work. Worship mode at school. Worship mode while resting. Worship mode during worship. Worship mode after worship. Worship mode during good times. Worship mode during bad times. He blessed them with freedom so that they can worship Him!
Worshipping mode throughout your life does not negate nor nullify the need for a dedicated time and day of worship. We still need to set aside time daily when we worship. We still need to keep the weekly Sabbath day. All these in addition to being constantly in worship mode. That is why God blesses us. That we may worship Him!
To worship is to reverently recognize that you are in the presence of God. In that recognition you praise God. In that recognition you listen to what God says. In that recognition you align your day to day life according to His will and not your will. You live a life that pleases Him.
To worship has to do with being in the presence of God. Being in worship mode is constantly being conscious that we are in God’s presence. We should live a lifestyle of a person who is conscious that I am permanently in the presence of God. This is why God blesses us, so that we can live such a lifestyle.
God informs Pharaoh through Moses, that He wants the Israelites to go out of Egypt. What are they going to do? They are going to worship God.
As they travel they are worshipping. As they socialize they are worshipping. As they form a nation and come up with a government, they are worshipping. As they confront enemies they are worshipping. Whatever they will be doing, must have an aspect of worship.
God wants Israelites to be free from Egypt, so that in that freedom they can worship Him. Freed to worship. Given a nationhood so that they can worship.
If Israelites succeeded in everything else but failed to worship, they would have failed miserably. It was not just about Canaan, it’s all about worship.
John 4:23-24 (NIV) – 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
God blesses people so that they can be worshipers. God provides for us so that we can be worshippers. God answers our prayers so that we can be worshippers. God does miraculous things for us, so that we can become worshippers. God is seeking worshippers.
Saved to worship. Blessed to worship. Favored to worship. May our lifestyle be that of worship. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
