Esther 3:2
All the royal officials at the king’s gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.
The book of Esther is a unique Bible book that doesn’t mention the name of God but heavily implies it. The book of Esther is in a setting where Jews are slaves in Babylon under Persian rule. When Babylon grew weak, it was overthrown and ruled by Medo-Persians. Jews who were captives of Babylon were now captives of Medo-Persia.
The story begins with a big party organized by the king of Persia to celebrate his civil servants. During the party that took several weeks running into months, the king while inebriated asked for his wife the queen to come and show off before the drunk guests. The queen declined the request and what followed was that she was fired and a new queen was sought to replace her.
Esther was among the many women who were rounded up to go for shortlisting into the position to replace the fired queen. Mordecai was a cousin to Esther. Mordecai and Esther were Jews, therefore foreigners and slaves of sorts in this kingdom. Mordecai was older than Esther and had brought her up as a guardian parent. When Esther was ordered to join the team that would be presented before the king, Mordecai allowed her to go and told her to be silent about her Jewishness for now. Eventually, Esther was chosen to be queen.
Mordecai had run into loggerheads with Haman who wanted everyone to give him the respect that was akin to worshipping him. This is where our key text today picks the story. One thing we observe about Mordecai is that throughout the story of the book of Esther, he is consistent. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
Consistency means that you maintain your position even under pressure. Mordecai knew that the king had ordered that Haman should be shown respect. Mordecai knew that such defiance as he was exhibiting could easily land him into a death sentence. But Mordecai remained consistent. You are only consistent if you can risk death to maintain your position. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
When a death decree against Jews was issued by the king under pressure from Haman, Mordecai decided that the best way out is for Esther to approach the king and plead for Jewish lives. Esther was reluctant but Mordecai who is known for consistency did not waver and insisted that Esther goes to meet the king. That consistency paid because the king reversed the decree to annihilate jews and he ordered the death of Haman. Mordecai comes out as a very consistent person and it pays. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
Consistency requires patience. You don’t see the results yet but you stick to it. You show up even when it seems meaningless. You keep going even when you have all the justifiable reasons to give up. Consistency in life always pays. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
If we are consistent with spiritual activities, we will grow spiritually. We should be consistent in prayer, Bible study, and worship attendance. If we are consistent in savings and investing money, we may fail for some time, but consistency will pay and pay well in the end. We only become authors by consistent writing. Our health requires consistency of prescribed diet and habits. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
If you consistently read books on a particular topic, you will become an expert. If you consistently use a skill, you get better and soon better than everyone else. Consistency means you refuse to get discouraged. Consistency means you are focused on one thing only. Consistency means you have only one point of reference. It is not worth starting anything if you will not be consistent. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
Marriage requires consistent commitment or else it won’t last. Are you consistent in your relationships? Business requires consistency since it has been observed that it takes up to three years for a business that has started to pick up or break even. If you cannot be consistent for over three years of struggle and failure in that business, don’t even start it. Consistency is expected and required if we are to achieve anything. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
Be consistent in your faith. Don’t just ask to keep the Sabbath to avoid studies and work, but when there is a wedding or party or trip, you break the sabbath to attend it, you are not consistent. If you don’t listen and dance to secular music, be consistent even in wedding receptions. Let your faith demonstrate consistency. If you don’t use drugs, alcohol, etc., be consistent even among friends in private meetings. If you are consistent you can achieve anything!
Consistency must be a hallmark of your life. You can’t be consistent in one area and inconsistent in another one, it doesn’t work that way. Inconsistency in one area affects all other areas. Be consistent even in your planning, waking up time, sleeping time, eating time, etc. Trust God consistently under all circumstances. If are consistent you can achieve anything!
Dear God, I pray that you make me consistent in all that I do, and may it come true that I will achieve much more beyond my expectations, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
