Apply It To Yourself

Job 5:27
“We have examined this, and it is true.
So hear it and apply it to yourself.”

New Living Translation
“We have studied life and found all this to be true. Listen to my counsel, and apply it to yourself.”

Amplified Bible
“Behold this; we have investigated it, and it is true. Hear and heed it, and know for yourself [for your own good].”

Eliphaz a friend of Job came with others to comfort Job in his great loss. In Job chapter five Eliphaz speaks to Job words that are very true about God. Eliphaz’s intentions may not be good. His intention is to prove Job wrong and himself right. While his intentions are not good but the speech he makes in the chapter is true.

Eliphaz ends his speech and now lets Job speak. He ends with the words in our text today. He tells Job that what he just said is true. He tells Job to listen and then apply it to himself. Apply it to yourself!

The wisest words spoken are only of value if we apply that wisdom to our lives. If we know the wisdom, it’s not enough. If we understand the wisdom it’s not enough. Eliphaz admonishes Job to apply it to himself.

If you have listened, you have done well but that is not enough. We listen to motivational speeches, and we get addicted and listen to them more and more. We should go beyond and apply that motivation to ourselves.

We listen to sermons. We get moved. We conclude the message is powerful. We even get attracted to the preacher and want to hear from them more and more. All that is good but of no value unless we apply it to ourselves.

We read life-changing books. We read books with great ideas. We learn new ideas that we are sure will change a life. However, all these mean nothing until we do what Eliphaz told Job. Apply it to yourself!

We can identify good advice and great information. We can identify and know advice that will serve certain people well. Nothing will change in our lives until we apply it to ourselves and not to anyone else. May God help us to always apply it to ourselves, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
