Deuteronomy 6:10 – When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,
Deuteronomy 6:11 – houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant— THEN WHEN YOU EAT AND ARE SATISFIED,
Deuteronomy 6:12 – BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT FORGET the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
6:10 – When God, your God, ushers you into the land he promised through your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you, you’re going to walk into large, bustling cities you didn’t build, (6:11 ) well-furnished houses you didn’t buy, come upon wells you didn’t dig, vineyards and olive orchards you didn’t plant. WHEN YOU TAKE IT ALL IN AND SETTLE DOWN, PLEASED AND CONTENT, (6:12) MAKE SURE YOU DON’T FORGET HOW YOU GOT THERE —God brought you out of slavery in Egypt. (Message Bible)
This was a speech by Moses to Israelites after many years in the wilderness and now they were preparing to settle into the promised land. Moses does not warn them of suffering. Moses warns them of satisfaction. Seemingly there are dangers of satisfaction.
Satisfaction is a state of being content with what you have. You have been searching, you got it and it’s enough and you are happy. When you are satisfied you want no more. When you are satisfied you are at peace. When you are satisfied you feel good. Yet there are dangers in satisfaction!
Satisfaction comes after a struggle. Satisfaction comes after a process. You ate and now you are satisfied. You have settled down in marriage, made many adjustments and now you are satisfied. Satisfaction is the apex. Satisfaction is the top of the mountain you were climbing. Satisfaction is a destination. Yet there are dangers in satisfaction!
Moses tells Israelites that their greatest danger is after satisfaction. After satisfaction human beings have a tendency to forget. Moses tells them that after satisfaction they may forget that it is God who brought them to this satisfying situation.
The danger of satisfaction is forgetting how you made it. The danger of satisfaction is forgetting where you came from. The danger of satisfaction is forgetting the process that brought you to this point.
The danger of satisfaction is forgetting the tears and prayers that made the journey possible. The danger of satisfaction is thinking effort and not God brought you this far. The danger of satisfaction is forgetting the God aspect of your journey and consequently abandoning Him in the present.
The danger of satisfaction is forgetting that you had no chance to make it this far except that God stepped in. The danger of satisfaction is bragging on your abilities which in reality didn’t do much to get you here. The danger of satisfaction is forgetting God and then abandoning Him.
The danger of satisfaction is forgetting the people who contributed to your journey up. The danger of satisfaction is thinking that the contributions others made for you are negligible and you can pay them back if they keep reminding you of what they did. The danger of satisfaction is forgetting that the people who encouraged you, prayed for you, and gave you support were your greatest strength. The dangers of satisfaction is under estimating the contribution of people in our lives!
The danger of satisfaction is also forgetting to sustain your stay at the top. The danger of satisfaction is creeping laziness as you falsely believe you can’t lose what you have. The danger of satisfaction is that you give up the struggle for better as you settle believing you have the best.
The danger of satisfaction makes a hard working worker lazy and full of excuses. The worker believes that he or she can magically fix the assignment at hand since they have done it before. The danger of satisfaction is that after success the worst of us comes out!
The danger of satisfaction makes a celebrated preacher complacent and turns him or her into an entertainer. The danger of satisfaction can make a spouse take the partner for granted thinking they can’t lose him or her. The danger of satisfaction puts the best student at risk of relegation. The danger of satisfaction can kill the practice and exercise spirit of a sportsperson.
Have you struggled and attained some satisfaction in your career? Have you struggled and attained some satisfaction in your business? Have you struggled and attained some satisfaction in your health, relationships, studies? Have you struggled and attained some satisfaction in your spiritual life?
1 Corinthians 10:12 – So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
10:12 Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. (Message Bible)
May God help us to succeed in our struggles. May God save us from the dangers of satisfaction in areas where we have succeeded. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
