1 Corinthians 7:23 – You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.(NIV)
1 Corinthians 7:23 – All of you, slave and free both, were once held hostage in a sinful society. Then a huge sum was paid out for your ransom. So please don’t, out of old habit, slip back into being or doing what everyone else tells you.(Message Bible)
A slave is not an employee. An employee offers services for pay but a slave is forced to work and serve at no pay. An employee can choose to stop working and forfeit the pay. A slave has no freedom to stop working, a slave must work whether they like it or not. A slave is not free from the master of mistress. A slave has no personal will. A slave operates at the will of the master or mistress. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Long ago when countries, kingdoms and communities fought, they captured people from the enemy side and brought them back to be their slaves. The slaves gave free forced labor until their dying day. The slaves were not free to think for themselves or act as they wish and feel. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Long ago when you borrowed money and were unable to pay, you could be made a slave to the one you owe money. You would work without freedom for a period of time. During that time you would be a slave. A slave who has no freedom to choose anything to do or say. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Proverbs 22:7 – The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
It is dangerous to borrow money when there is a potential that you cant repay. In ability to repay makes you a slave to the one you owe. You fear the one you owe. You hide from the one you owe. You tolerate harassment from the one you owe. Everything you have could be taken by the one you owe. Owing money you cant repay makes you a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can easily be a slave to your friends? When your friends make a decision and you agree with their decisions all the time. When you go along with your friends even when it is to your disadvantage, you are a slave. Because of your friends you didn’t do your homework. Because of your friends you defy your parents by coming home late. Because of your friends the values you learnt at home are no longer attractive. Because of your friends your attitude at work or towards someone has changed. You have made losses because of your friends. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can be a slave to someone you love? You become so afraid of losing the person that you go to great lengths to please the person. You deny yourself basics and rights and you bend backwards to please the person. You are a slave. The more you try to please, the more the person drifts away. You are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know that you can become a slave to your favourite politician? You don’t critically interrogate the politician’s decision. You find yourself defending the politician yet you don’t have all the facts and many times you are proved wrong. You almost lose friends and life because of the politician who may not even know you. When the politician makes an about turn on issues, you do the same. When the politician hates someone or a group, you hate too, and when they suddenly love, you love too. You are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can become a slave to your race or tribe or community? You are so beholden to them and they dictate your actions. You make decisions in reference to their approval. If this is costing your personal happiness, security and progress, you are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know that you can become a slave to a religious leader or organisation? You are so faithful to the leader or the organisation and you refuse to see sense or rationalise even obvious things. You put your welfare in jeopardy. You refuse to listen to any counsel that challenges your beliefs and actions. You cant explain yourself well but you rather die than think about it. Whatever your religion or religious leader says you will do without a second thought. You are a slave of the human being called religious leader. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can become a slave to a hero, heroine, icon, sports person, movies star and etc? You are so obsessed with everything about them and you even adjust your life to be like them, without interrogating the consequences. You are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can become a slave to people who guarantee your income? You do everything to please your bosses even when it harms others and alienates you from others. You overwork. You ignore your family. You push our friends and male enemies. All to impress a boss who guarantees your income. You become so loyal that your refuse to reason or think. Whatever right or wrong the boss suggests, you are in agreement. You are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can be a slave to social media updates by human beings? A slave to television programmes by human beings? Music by human beings? That addiction is slavery because you cant help it. You are a slave. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
Did you know you can become a slave to human ideas and ideologies? You become so committed to the ideas and defend them even when they have been proven wrong. You would rather make enemies and make losses than abandon the school of thought. You are a slave to the human being who came up with the idea. The Bible tells us that we shouldn’t become slaves of human beings!
God has bought us at a great price. The price of Jesus dying on the cross. Therefore, the Bible tells us to completely avoid being slaves to anyone. May we never be slaves to anyone. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
