Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
You have the power to hold it in or let it come out. Since you know what is in and that it is not fit to come out, do not let it come out. Let it stay there and it may only harm you, instead of harming many other people. Do not let it come out!
Apostle Paul tells the church to have self-control as individuals. He says they should be vigilant about what they say. If what they want to say is unwholesome, he advises them to shut up. Do not let it come out!
New Living Translation
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
Amplified Bible
Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].
Contemporary English Version
Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say.
Good News Translation
Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.
Unwholesome talk has been defined in many and various ways. Foul language. Abusive language. Profane, worthless, vulgar words. Dirty talk. Evil speech. Hateful words. Filthy talk. corrupt words, etc. All that is unwholesome talk that we process from within and we have the power to hold it in or let it out. Do not let it come out!
Unwholesome talk is processed from within as a result of us consuming wrong movies, wrong books, wrong songs, or having wrong friends who suggest it to us. Unwholesome talk may also be a result of being offended and anger churning up within. Whichever way, it begins from within before it comes out. Do not let it come out!
Once it comes out, it’s too late to reverse its effects. No apology will undo the harm. You may be forgiven but the scar will remain in the mind. The best you can do is to keep it in and let it be processed from there. Many relationships lost it because unwholesome talk came out in a moment of anger. Reconciliation was done, but now they must live with the scar. The Bible gives us the best advice on what to do when the unwholesome talk is developing within us. Do not let it come out!
Unwholesome talk is not just what we say, but also what we comment on social media. What we update as status. The unwholesome talk includes what we respond to others that we know and those we do not know. Our comments may cause the stranger to go into depression and eventually die. We may never know but heaven takes note that it was our words that caused that death. We may be anonymous while online as we operate with a hidden identity, but God knows we are the ones who have hurt the other person. When you are online and unwholesome comments, replies or words are about to come out, follow the Bible’s advice. Do not let it come out!
Some people have lost job opportunities because of unwholesome talk. Some people have lost business opportunities because of unwholesome talk. Some people have lost favor with those they should get help from because of unwholesome talk. The unwholesome talk should be detected when it’s processing within and be stopped before it comes out. Do not let it come out!
Are you in a confrontation? Do you feel offended? Are you feeling anger building within? Has someone hurt you and you feel like giving them a piece of your mind? If you are online, keep scrolling away or log out until you have controlled that unwholesome talk. If it is physically, walks away, and cool off until that unwholesome talk is contained within. Do not let it come out!
If you feel like expressing yourself, tell a counselor, or another responsible person who will help you and keep it confidential. Only speak to the offending person when you are fully in control and no unwholesome talk will sneak out. May God help us not to let it come out, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
