2 Kings 4:3
Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.
She was a wife to a prophet. A wife to a man of God. They had been married long enough to have two children. But in a sinful world misfortune happens to all. Her husband the prophet died.
Though he was a prophet he was human and going through like all of us. Like it could happen to all of us, he had debts. He owed someone money. It seemed the amount was substantial in that the widow wasn’t able to pay. The amount was so substantial that the children could be taken as slaves in order to have the money recovered.
The late prophet had asked for money from a ruthless man. The man had no sympathy for the widow. The man didn’t care that she was a widow and that taking her sons would add to her pain. The man was so ruthless and his reputation did not allow anyone to go plead with him for mercy. His threats were real and the widow needed urgent help.
The widow went to Elisha seeking help from threats paused by this man. Elisha asked the lady to say what she has. The lady said she only had a jar of oil. She didn’t think much of that jar of oil. Yet it is with that jar of oil that the prophet gave her help.
We too could be having a jar of oil that we look down upon. We think it can’t do much. Yet it is that jar of oil that you don’t think much about, that will make a huge difference in your life.
God asked Moses what he had. Moses had a simple shepherd’s rod. A stick. Ordinary stick. Yet it is that stick that God used to make a difference in his leadership.
What is it that you have? A small income? A small house? A small piece of land. A small network of not very influential people? A small idea? A small unexplored talent? If you put it into God’s hands, it will be bigger and better beyond your expectations. Give it to God!
Elisha told the widow to go and borrow containers that she will fill with oil. She was to borrow containers from neighbors and friends. After filling the oil she would sell it. The first step was to borrow and collect as many containers as possible. The prophet tells her not to ask for a few containers. Don’t ask for just a few. Do not limit yourself!
Many times we limit ourselves. Limiting yourself is cursing yourself. While your goals must be realistic, they must be very high. While reality may inform you to be limited, faith should bolster you to the highest goals possible. With faith in God, everything is possible. Do not limit yourself!
Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
God can help us go beyond our imagination. Therefore, aim to the extreme end of your imagination. God will take you beyond. Do not limit yourself!
Make that move. Make that investment. Take that exam. Go public. Write that book. Apply for that job. Start a side hustle. Whatever it is, do your best for the highest goal and God will do the rest. Do not limit yourself, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
