Mark 8:17-21 (NIV) – 17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied. 20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.” 21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
After all the explanations and examples, are you still unable to understand? Have you missed the point all along? Should I repeat everything I have said and done so that you can understand? Do you still not understand?
The disciples of Jesus were worried that they did not carry enough bread for them and Jesus. When Jesus made a statement about yeast, they immediately thought He was referring to the shortage of bread. They started discussing on what to do with the shortage of bread that was now concerning their Master Jesus.
Jesus asks them, if I did a miracle and fed five thousand men besides women and children who are present, using only five loaves and two pieces of fish, are you still worried that we have only one loaf of bread? Do you still not understand?
Jesus asks them, if I fed four thousand men besides women and children who were present, using only seven loaves, am I unable to feed the few of us in this boat with one loaf? After all these evidences, you are still worried about having one loaf only for all of us? Do you still not understand?
Jesus asks them, if with a very small meal I fed everyone and we even had many baskets of food remaining, are you still worried that we only have one loaf of bread? Did you miss the lesson that miracle taught about My ability to provide for all of you? Do you still not understand?
I am Jesus the miracle worker. I am here with you. I have demonstrated that nothing is impossible when you are with Me. I have shown that when you are with Me little is much. You have seen that when you are with Me, you can’t have a shortage. Why are you worried that one loaf is not enough for all of us, yet you are with Me? Do you still not understand?
Jesus is almost irritated and annoyed. Is the problem your heart? Is your heart so hard that you can’t understand? Do you have eyes and you fail to see? You have ears but can’t hear anything? Jesus asks them, don’t you remember what I did? Do you still not understand?
I raised you from poverty to where you are and you are still worried about the future? Do you still not understand? You have passed all exams by my help and now you are so worried about this one exam as if you don’t remember how I helped you with other exams. Are you forgetting? Do you still not understand?
You are so worried about a life partner? Haven’t I solved bigger problems for you? Do you still not understand? I made you handsome and beautiful. I gave you a social circle. A few years ago you would not be having these circle of friends that you now have. But you are so worried about a life partner, thinking I have failed you. Can’t you remember? Do you still not understand?
You are worried about losing your job? Have you forgotten surviving without a job? Wasn’t it Me who helped you? Am I not the one who gave you this job? Haven’t I saved you in the past from almost losing your job? Have you forgotten? Do you still not understand?
God wonders if we remember how far He has brought us from. When we act as if He can’t help. When we panic as if He will abandon us. When we act as if He is not able and loving enough. When we act as if He is not caring. He asks, if we have forgotten? Hasn’t history of your own life taught you that God is faithful and will never fail His people? Do you still not understand?
“I don’t feel no ways tired,
I’ve come too far from where I started from.
Nobody told me that the road would be easy,
I don’t believe He brought me this far to leave me.”
God did not bring us this far to leave us here. Even when it seems too late, God will reverse the situation. Even when it seems we are running out of time, God is in control. He has done it before and He will do it again. Do you still not understand?
“He’ll do it again (Oh He’ll do it again)
He’ll do it again (Yes He will do it again)
If you’ll just take a look
At where you are now
And where you’ve been
Hasn’t He always come through for you
He’s the same now as then (Don’t you know God has not changed)
You may not know how
You may not know when
But He’ll do it again”
What are you worried about today? Jesus had a question for you and me. Do you still not understand? Forgive us Lord and grant us faith in You under extreme circumstances and ordinary circumstances. May we never again act as if we don’t understand. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
