Numbers 5:5-7
(5) The LORD said to Moses, (6) “Say to the Israelites: ‘Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD is guilty (7) and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged.
To be unfaithful to the LORD is to fail in fulfilling what you promised Him or were supposed to do for His sake. To be unfaithful to the LORD is to offend God. Since God has our lives in His hands and He wields so much power that can favor us or harm us, we are careful to be faithful to Him.
To be unfaithful to the LORD is to put your own welfare in jeopardy. To be unfaithful to the LORD is actually suicidal. To be unfaithful to the LORD is a risk that everyone in their right mind avoids.
God knows everything and no excuses can fool Him. God can read thoughts. God can be anywhere and everywhere at the same time. You can’t lie to God and trick Him to believe your lies. To be unfaithful to God is therefore inexcusable.
We find it easy to wrong people. We wrong people because we are stronger and privileged they can’t harm us. We wrong people because we can confuse them to believe they wronged themselves. We can make people believe they are to blame for the harm we cause them. We can wrong people and forget them and go free without punishment.
But we fear to wrong God. To wrong God would be disastrous. To wrong God is to be unfaithful to God.
In a major surprise, the Bible says to us that when we wrong the ordinary people around us, we are unfaithful to God. When we oppress the poor and those within our reach to harm, we are unfaithful to God. It is God we are offending.
When we do wrong to anyone, God gets offended. The person we ordered out of our office, may have gone and left us in peace, but God was offended and may take long but He will respond. The person we punished unfairly may never challenge us but God who was offended will retaliate on his or her behalf. It is God we offend when we hurt others!
What wrong have you done to the helpless under you? You can justify with explanations and flimsy excuses but God got offended and will avenge their pain. We wrong others at home. We wrong others at work. We wrong others in the business. We do wrong even to strangers. We may win the argument but by doing wrong to others we have God against us.
May God give us the wisdom to live well with others. May God forgive us for those we wronged and forgot and had consequently hurt God. May God help us not to wrong each other, in Jesus’ name, Amen!

“Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
