1 Kings 7:13
King Solomon sent to Tyre and brought Huram,
1 Kings 7:14
whose mother was a widow from the tribe of Naphtali and whose father was from Tyre and a skilled craftsman in bronze. Huram was filled with wisdom, with understanding and with knowledge to do all kinds of bronze work. He came to King Solomon and did all the work assigned to him.
Huram is the same name as Hiram. The name means he is noble-born, or whiteness, or bitter. Three Hurams in the Bible. First, Huram son of Bela of the tribe of Benjamin. Secondly, Huram or Hiram the King of Tyre. Thirdly, Huram the expert who king Huram of Tyre sent to King Solomon to help build the temple. Our focus today is on this expert. Our text today refers to this expert. If Huram made it, we can make it!
Huram’s mother an Israelite from Naphtali made a terrible mistake by getting married to a man of Tyre. Marriage outside Israel was not allowed, Deuteronomy 7:3. Huram was born out of this bad marriage. He was rejected before he was born.
Then Huram’s father died. The Bible tells us that the mother was a widow. In a society where women were considered less human. In a society where your father’s tribe mattered. Huram was unlucky. Widows were abused and treated as less human. Huram was born unlucky and grew up in suffering as the son of a widow. As a son from a bad marriage. As a son of a foreigner. If Huram made it we can make it!
Growing up without a father figure affects any child at any time in history. Boys get much more affected by the absence of the father. The psychological damage of a missing father is significant. Huram grew with such psychological challenges and disadvantages. If Huram made it we can make it!
2 Chronicles 2:12-14 tells us Huram was sent by Huram/Hiram king of Tyre. He came from Tyre. His father died and he couldn’t be accepted in Israel. Israel didn’t need him as he grew up. Huram and the mother had to live in Tyre. If the mother returned to Israel, she couldn’t return with him. Israel didn’t need Huram. Huram was a reject by Israel. If Huram made it we can make it!
Huram who had so many misfortunes and couldn’t come to Israel freely and happily was now coming in a special capacity. Huram the reject and unfortunate came as a special envoy of the King of Tyre. Huram with a bad beginning and poor growth was now coming as chief architect-engineer of the most important building in Israel- the temple of God. Huram who should have ended up a slave being ordered around by others was now coming as an expert who Israelites would work under and take his orders. If Huram made it we can make it!
The entire chapter of our passage today is dedicated to the excellent expert work by Huram. Huram’s contribution to the most important building in Israel was greater than that of other privileged children. Huram’s life had a greater positive impact than the lives of children who grew up right, lived right, and was bound to succeed. If Huram made it we can make it!
Huram had many misfortunes at birth and while growing up but that didn’t have to remain that way. Things can go wrong but they don’t have to remain that way. Even a misfortune that seems permanent is not permanent. There is hope for anyone and everyone. A bad yesterday doesn’t mean today will be bad. A bad today is not equal to a bad tomorrow. A bad beginning is not obviously a bad end. Job ended well in fact much better. Huram ended up a hero even in the Bible. If Huram made it we can make it!
Huram was trained. Huram was skilled. Do not give up on yourself, do something. Get some training. Do some business. Hustle somewhere. The Bible tells us Huram was trained and highly experienced. He didn’t sit down praying and waiting for donor money and free sponsorship. Praying without working is a curse. Hunting for free things is a curse. Huram had experience after training. That means he worked a lot. Experience means lots and lots of work. Lazybones cannot match Huram, he was experienced. Begging politicians for money and writing touching emails to donors and churches abroad is not the secret to success. Huram got training then worked a lot. He didn’t just work, he worked well until the king of Tyre could send him as a special envoy to Israel. God blesses with good luck those who work hard and excellently. If Huram made it we can make it!
The marriage from which Huram was born was against God’s will. Huram and mother must have been condemned by religious people. But God forgives and blesses. God forgave and blessed them. The mother was alive to witness her rejected son building the temple for God as chief engineer. Forgiveness from God is available for all of us. If Huram made it we can make it!
My story may not be the same as Huram’s but it resonates with his struggles. May God help me to work hard and excellently. May God help me to rise above the challenges of yesterday and today. May the God who did it for Huram, do it for me too, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
Amen… Indeed, we won’t be in pain all through. If Huram made it we can make it!
Amen
