Obadiah 1:15
“The day of the LORD is near
for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds will return upon your own head.
New Living Translation
“The day is near when I, the LORD, will judge all godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads.
Amplified Bible
“For the [judgment] day of the LORD draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you [in retribution]; Your [evil] dealings will return on your own head.
The prophecy of Obadiah is against Edom. Edom was the home of the descendants of Esau. Jacob and Esau were twin brothers, sons of Isaac son of Abraham. Descendants of Jacob are Israelites. Edomites and Israelites had a long-standing rivalry. God through prophet Obadiah condemns Edom for refusing to help the Israelites when they were attacked. God condemns the Edomites for celebrating the downfall of Israel.
God is against Edom for cooperating with the enemies of Israel. God promises that He will totally destroy Edom. True to the word of God, Edom and Edomites no longer exist. God is concerned when we laugh at those facing misfortune. God watches as we join hands with enemies of His people to destroy someone. God promises to address that wanton behavior!
In our text today, God tells Edom that before they are fully obliterated from the face of the earth something will have to happen first. What will happen? Justice will be served. Exactly how they treated Israelites is how God will ensure they are treated. Exactly the pain Israelites had and the cry they made, is what Edomites will experience before they are wiped from the earth.
We should be careful what we do to others because the same thing will be done to us. This is why wise leaders and others always say, it is safer to err on the side of being merciful. You too will receive mercy. God has a divine principle that He will ensure that what we do to others will be done to us. If only we took this divine principle seriously, our relationships with each other will be at its best!
Matthew 7:1-2
(1) “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. (2) For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
It is a divine principle that how we treat others is how we will be treated when we get into the same situation. It is therefore wise to always go slow and think carefully before acting on others. When we get to that situation, God Himself will ensure that we get the treatment we dished out to others.
How you treat domestic workers who are desperately dependent on you, is how you will someday be treated by those you are desperately dependent on. How you treated those who wrong you, is how you will be treated by those you wrong. How we treat those who owe us is how we will be treated by those we owe. If only we took this divine principle seriously, the world would be a better place.
What about the ruler who must mete out justice? Should the ruler be afraid of imprisoning those who deserve to be locked up? No! If locking them up for a hundred years is the most just thing you have done, then it means you too will be justly treated someday when you need justice, and that is not equivalent to saying if you lock up someone for a hundred years, you too will be locked up for a hundred years. You acted justly in locking him up and you too will be treated justly in another future matter. What we do to others will be done to us. This is a divine principle playing out in life. If only we took this divine principle seriously!
Matthew 26:52
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
To avoid suffering from how we treat others, we should treat others justly and fairly. Jesus told Peter to put away his sword in order to avoid dying by the sword. Put away your sword against a family member. Put away your sword against your neighbor. Put away your sword against your juniors and seniors. Put away your sword and you will avoid dying by the sword. May God help us to put away the sword, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
