Song of Songs 5:6
I opened for my beloved,
but my beloved had left; he was gone.
My heart sank at his departure.
I looked for him but did not find him.
I called him but he did not answer.
The song of songs is a dialogue between two people in love, a man and a woman. The book expresses love as God created us to do it. The love expression is so raw that the hypocrisy in us almost wants us to doubt whether the book is inspired.
In this part of the dialogue, the lady is alone at home, thinking about her male lover. She is preoccupied with her love relationship. She is relaxed in bed and already dressed for the night and needs no disturbance as she wishfully thinks about her boyfriend. Then as she lay in bed her boyfriend knocked at the door.
Song of Songs 5:2
I slept but my heart was awake.
Listen! My beloved is knocking:
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
my dove, my flawless one.
My head is drenched with dew,
my hair with the dampness of the night.”
Song of Songs 5:3
I have taken off my robe—
must I put it on again?
I have washed my feet—
must I soil them again?
The girl is in bed and wonders whether to wake up and open the door for her male friend. Meanwhile, as she delays and wonders, her boyfriend is at the door desperately knocking. The boyfriend even puts the hand through the latch to see if he can open the door that is locked from inside. This attempt to open the door excites the lady but she does not take action to open the door.
Song of Songs 5:4
My beloved thrust his hand through the latch-opening;
my heart began to pound for him.
What the beautiful lady didn’t know was that the delay would cost her dearly. When she eventually went to open the door, the man was long gone and a whole nigh search couldn’t yield anything. If you delay some actions you will lose!
Song of Songs 5:5-6
(5) I arose to open for my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,
my fingers with flowing myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
(6) I opened for my beloved,
but my beloved had left; he was gone.
My heart sank at his departure.
I looked for him but did not find him.
I called him but he did not answer.
Delays can be costly. A delay to respond to a love proposal may cost you the best friend ever. A delay to reply to an email may cost you a financial opportunity. A delay to reach the airport may cost you an important trip. Delay is dangerous and the cost is many times irreversible. If you delay some actions you will lose!
What are you currently postponing out of laziness? What are you currently undecided about? What are you currently reluctant to decide about? Delay is dangerous, it can cost you dearly. If you delay some actions you will lose!
Do not delay decisions that are good for your spiritual growth. Do not delay decisions that are good for your relationships with loved ones. Do not delay decisions that are good for your financial growth. Do not delay decisions that are good for your excellence in school and at work. If you delay some actions you will lose!
May God save us from the habit of delaying. May God give us the courage to make decisions and act on time. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
