1 Corinthians 3:3
You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?
The church in Corinth had so many issues. Apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth two long letters laden with so many issues. While we have two letters to Corinth, we have every reason to believe there was another letter to Corinth that we do not have.
1 Corinthians 5:9
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—
If the first Corinthians we have in the Bible is Paul’s first letter to Corinth, how comes in that first letter he refers to another letter. This makes us believe that there could have been other lost letters of Paul and particularly to Corinth. We also believe that the first Corinthians that we have in the Bible is not the first letter he wrote to Corinth.
If there were many other letters that Paul wrote, there must be a reason why God did not allow us to get them. There must be a special message God has for us in the letters we have. We should therefore read with keen interest, for herein is God’s message for us.
As earlier mentioned, the Corinthian church had so many issues that Apostle Paul sought to address in his letters to them. The chapter of consideration today focuses on the problem of divisions in the church. The Corinthian church members were opposed to each other as they aligned themselves to leaders of their choice. One group claiming to believe in one leader, we’re opposed to those under the other leader, 1 Corinthians 3:4. This was the problem!
Divisions in the church have never ended. Divisions based on race and tribe. Divisions based on economic status. Divisions based on family. Divisions because of biblical interpretation. Divisions under opposing leaders, etc.
In our text, Apostle Paul tells the church that their divisions are because they are still worldly. They are pagans masquerading as Christians. They are hypocrites. They are secular in every sense only that they identify with the church. There is no way you can be heaven-bound and divided. If you still have divisions among you, you are hell-bound, the journey to heaven is unattainable wishful thinking. No one gets to heaven divided and bitterly so. If you still have divisions among you it’s dangerous!
In our text today, Apostle Paul tells the church that at the root of divisions are jealousy and quarrels. You are divided because you are jealous. It doesn’t matter how colored the language is used to explain the cause of division, its root is jealousy and quarreling. Jealousy and quarreling are driving forces of unhealthy competition. If you still have jealousy and quarreling among you, be very worried. If you still have these it’s dangerous!
Dear God, we are exposed, save us from these vices, and restore us to Yourself. As You help us excel in the things of this world, may we not fail spiritually for that should come first, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
