Leviticus 7:1 – “‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering, which is MOST HOLY:
Leviticus 7:6 – Any male in a priest’s family may eat it, but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is MOST HOLY.
When something is said to be most holy in biblical lingo, it suggests that it is most important to God. Our Bible passage today tells us that this offering was most holy. God considered it very important. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Holy means it has been dedicated to God. It has been set aside for God. It’s good, pure, perfect, excellent and incomparable, therefore it can be associated with God. It can’t be holy if it’s not associated with God. It’s not holy if it’s not the best of the best. This offering is said to be most holy, it is important to God. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
The five offerings in the Old Testament are (1) Burnt Offerings (2) Grain Offerings (3) Peace Offerings (4) Sin Offerings and (5) Guilt Offerings. In our text today the entire guilt offering is mentioned as being most holy. The other offerings could be having parts that are most holy, but the entire guilt offering is most holy. That means it’s very important to God. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Burnt offering was a general kind of offering. It sought to honor God and even seek a generalized kind of restoration of relationships with God also known as atonement. Grain offerings was a demonstration of loyalty to God. This was an agricultural community. Giving this offering meant the giver was dedicated to God. Yet guilt offering is said to be most holy, meaning it was very important to God. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Peace offerings also known as Fellowship offerings were seeking a good relationship between God and His people. Peace with God which is also a New Testament theme of salvation. Sin offerings were given as the giver sought purity through forgiveness of all sins. The giver recognized that sin has separated us from God. Not necessarily any specific sin, but an acknowledgment that we are all deep in si and we have offended God. This offering was specific in seeking to address the damage of sin in our relationship with God. At the end of the offering the giver felt purified! Yet the guilt offering is highlighted as most holy, meaning it is very important to God. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
What is this guilt offering that is most holy to God? This offering sought to address very specific offenses against God and or fellow human beings. It even began with compensation where necessary and possible.
Leviticus 6:4 – when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found,
Leviticus 6:5 – or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.
Leviticus 6:6 – And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the LORD, their guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.
Leviticus 6:7 – In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the LORD, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”
Guilt offerings were given to fix broken relationships and remove guilt. This is what God refers to as most holy. To fix broken relationships between us and God. To fix broken relationships with others around us. To remove guilt so that we are at peace with God and others. This is most holy to God. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Is your relationship with God important enough for you to prioritize it? Do you prioritize prayer, Bible study, living according to what the Bible teaches and church attendance? Are these things important to you? God considers them most holy, very important. Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Is your relationship with others important? Loving them. Forgiving them. Apologizing to them. Giving them priority over yourself. Your wife, husband, children, parents, and other relatives. Your neighbors, friends, colleagues and even strangers. God considers these relationships as most holy, very important. The offering that fixes these relationships is most holy. Do you actively work on fixing these relationships? Is it most holy to you as it is important to God? Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
Is a guiltless life your desire? Do you want your past offenses settled so that you no longer live with guilt? The process of making you guiltless is most holy to God. What about to you? God commands others to forgive you so that you are guiltless. Do you also forgive others so that they are guiltless? God promises to forgive you and make you guiltless if you confess and repent. We no longer give these offerings that were given in the Old Testament, because Jesus became the offering. However we still need to address the issues the offerings addressed. The issues guilt offering addressed remain most holy. Restoration of our relationship with God and others by addressing specific particular offenses. Moving from guilty to guiltless. These are most holy to God even today! Is it as important to you as it is to Him?
May God help us to address very specific offenses that have broken our relationship with God and with others. Ask for forgiveness and forgive others. Compensate those who need compensation. Believe you are forgiven and live a guiltless life and let others live a guiltless life. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
