2 Peter 2:21
It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.
2 Peter 2:22
Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
Knowing has made a difference. Knowing has placed some expectations on us. Knowing means we are now required to act according to what we know. You can’t undo knowing. Once you know, it is too late to unknow(sic) what you now know. If we can’t act on what we know, it is better if we didn’t know!
There are many things to know but the most precious knowledge is knowledge of a saving Saviour and the free salvation He offers. Once you know the will of God, you can’t undo that knowledge and you must act on it. If you can’t live according to the will of God that you have known, it is better if you didn’t know!
Luke 12:47
“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.
Luke 12:48
But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
The one who knows and the one who doesn’t know, cannot be treated the same way. There is a higher expectation on the one who knows. Our forefathers who never knew Christianity will not be treated the same way as us who have full knowledge of the Christian faith. The early Christians who couldn’t read or access the Bible will not be treated the same way as us who can read and access Bibles with ease. Therefore those of us who know must act according to what we now know. If we cant act according to what we now know, it is better if we didn’t know!
There is greater punishment for the one who knows but does not act according to what they know. We will be punished for ignoring the knowledge we have. If we cant act according to what we now know, it is better if we didn’t know!
Hebrews 6:4
It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
Hebrews 6:5
who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age
Hebrews 6:6
and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
To know and then backslide for whatever reason and live as if you didn’t know is the most dangerous thing. Hebrews tells us that it may be impossible to come back to repentance. It is as good as saying Jesus deserves to be crucified again. To know and reject that knowledge of the will of God is to demand that Jesus suffered again and dies again. It is dangerous to know and not act. If we cant act according to what we now know, it is better if we didn’t know!
To know that you should give tithe and offerings and to fail to do so is dangerous beyond spiritual dangers. To know you should attend church then you don’t is risky to your entire existence. To know about the Sabbath and to fail to keep it is a rebellion against God. To know that you must forgive those who offend you and to fail to forgive is to put your own forgiveness by God in jeopardy. To know about marrying someone of your faith and to ignore is to set yourself up for a life without divine favor. To know that wives submit and husbands love and then live opposite to that knowledge is to court domestic disaster. To know that children should obey parents and you do not is to shorten your life. If we cant act according to what we now know, it is better if we didn’t know!
Since it is too late to undo what we now know, may God help us to live according to what He has revealed to us in the Bible, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
