2 Kings 7:2 – The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it!”
There was famine in Samaria city. Parents were even eating their children. Animal waste was the most expensive food. It was impossible to imagine that food will suddenly be available. Yet God promised through Prophet Elisha that less than 24hours later there will be excess food for everyone. How? From where? It was easier to doubt than believe. Yet it is safer to believe God’s word even if it doesn’t add up!
The Aramean army had besieged Samaria. The city was surrounded. No one and nothing could get in or go out without the risk of death and destruction. People were dying. How would there be food suddenly? Even if Arameans left, there would be need to go buy food from far countries. That would take many days. Excess food enough for everyone tomorrow was hard to believe from human perspective. Yet it is safer to believe God’s word even if it doesn’t add up!
For the Aramean army to retreat properly the military way, it will take days. How will food be excessively available tomorrow? This word from God was a hard one to believe. There was no evidence that it would be possible. Yet it is safer to believe God’s word even if it doesn’t add up!
When Elisha reported God’s word to the king there was no excitement. The king and others reverently listened to God’s word. But one of the king’s handlers was careless. He expressed doubt about God’s word. He spoke and said, It would be impossible for God to fulfill His promise. Yet nothing is impossible with God. He was careless in dealing with the things of God. Elisha gave him the response in our text today.
2 Kings 7:2 – The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it!”
Elisha pronounced a curse on him for limiting God to his human abilities. Elisha cursed him for doubting God. Elisha cursed him for calling God a liar. Elisha cursed him for trying to influence others to doubt God. Elisha told him that since he didn’t believe God’s word, he will see the food but he won’t eat it. It is safer to believe God’s word even if it doesn’t add up!
That night after Elisha gave promise from God, something happened. Lepers who were outside the city starving, went to Aramean army cam to beg for food. To their surprise, the Aramean army had fled out of fear imposed on them by God. They left enough food behind for the whole city of Samaria.
The lepers reported to city guards and after due diligence by king’s staff, the whole city was allowed to go and get the free excess food. The man who doubted God’s word. The man who Elisha cursed for doubting God’s word, was trampled to death at the gate during the stampede as people rushed for food. He was cursed that he will see the food but he won’t eat it. He saw the food but didn’t eat it. It is safer to believe God’s word even when it doesn’t add up!
We are limited in ability and thinking, God is not limited at all. We should not think that our limits are God’s limits. When God makes a promise, He isn’t limited to do the way we think it should be done. Nothing is impossible with God. It is safer to believe God’s word even when it doesn’t add up.
Who knew Abraham and Sarah at old age could get a child? Who knew the Red Sea could open and Israel walks through? Who knew God could drop food known as manna daily for Israelites? Who knew God could provide meat to protesting Israelites by sending thousands of birds to land in their tents? Who knew the dead could be raised? Who knew the barren could have children? All these things and many more were outside human imagination yet God did it. It is safer to believe God’s word even when it doesn’t add up!
Let us remain faithful to God even when His promise seems impossible to fulfill. Let us wait on God without doubting, even when humanly speaking we don’t see any way His promise would be fulfilled. It is safer to believe God’s word even when it doesn’t add up!
Mark 9:24 – Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
I believe! May God help me overcome my unbelief. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
