Kill That Thing!

Colossians 3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Amplified Bible
So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body [with its sensual, self-centered instincts] immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is [a kind of] idolatry [because it replaces your devotion to God].

Contemporary English Version
Don’t be controlled by your body. Kill every desire for the wrong kind of sex. Don’t be immoral or indecent or have evil thoughts. Don’t be greedy, which is the same as worshiping idols.

Good News Translation
You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry).

These varied versions of the Bible make the message interesting and very clear. There is a command to kill. A command to put to death. A command to end the life of something, and the Amplified Bible asks us to deprive it of power. The message is simple – Kill that thing!

At this chapter of the letter to Colossians, Apostle Paul tells them that they are now heaven-bound. They are believers. They are the family of God. They have made it in their faith. In fact he begins the chapter by confirming their spiritual progress. “Since, the, you have been raised with Christ…” Colossians 3:1.

Now Apostle Paul orders them to perfect their decision by putting to death whatever evils are remaining in their lives. Whatever is not heaven-bound must be put to death. Whatever belonged to their past and has no place in their future life must be put to death. Kill that thing!

A believer cannot be sexually immoral, kill that thing. Pornography, kill that thing. Masturbation, kill that thing. Multiple affairs, kill that thing. Sex before marriage even with just one committed partner is very wrong, kill that thing. Cohabiting before marriage, kill that thing. Sex outside the boundaries of marriage, kill that thing. Friends and groups that turn your mind to sexual immoral content, kill your connection with them and get connected to new upright people. Kill that thing!

Kill that thing means, don’t give it a chance to even rise up. When you kill something it’s gone for good. What you kill you cant revisit. What you kill is over in your life and you move on and learn to live without it. To avoid backsliding, kill that thing. Other things listed for killing are impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed. Kill that thing!

You are progressing well at work, in business, in your studies, but some habits are pulling you back, for the sake of your great future, kill that thing. Kill that laziness. Kill that procrastination. Kill that unprofessional use of money. Your success depends on heeding this command today, kill that thing!

You are progressing well in your relationship, but there is a behavior that may grow and destroy your happiness and relationship. Your partner has complained. It has been pointed out to you several times. If you still want to be happy, kill that thing. A thing means ending bad behavior and not killing a person. This is no command to murder anyone. It is sin and criminal to murder. It is killing that thing and not that person. Kill that thing!

If there is another relationship getting in the way of your relationship, end that extra relationship, kill that thing. Kill that attitude. Kill that unacceptable language. Kill that provocation that offends your partner. Kill that thing!

Your spiritual life requires that you kill some things. Kill your prayer-less behavior. Kill your Lateness to worship. Kill your antisocial behavior in church. Kill your erratic giving and give consistently. Kill your avoidance of church work. Kill that thing!

Help me God, to kill that thing that stands on my way to excellence, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
