Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see some good!” Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O LORD.
New Living Translation
Many people say, “Who will show us better times?” Let your face smile on us, LORD.
Psalm number four or chapter four as some may refer to it addresses various issues. The Psalmist asks God to answer him when he calls. In the second verse, Psalmist quotes God making a complaint about idolatry. The psalmist goes ahead to address various issues.
The Psalmist in this part of the song, poem, and prayer demonstrates the difference between believers and non-believers. He tells us that many people are asking how they can prosper. They want to prosper but they do not know how to go about it. They are praying and wishing for progress and success in their lives.
When he writes what many are saying, it suggests that they do not have an answer. Many suggest that it is a common problem. Many suggest that no answer has come and the number of those asking is rising. Many are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
Many are asking, “who will show us better times?” A question of desperation. It seems those who should have responded to the many have failed them. If those we expected to help us cannot do so, “who will be good to us?”
The question shows the desperation of the majority of people on earth. The majority of the people have no clear formulas to help them hack life’s challenges. They are left wondering, “who will bring us prosperity?”
The second part of that verse that comes immediately after that question, shows a clear contrast between the majority who are non-believers and the believers. While the majority are wondering how they will prosper, the believers say a prayer to God to provide for their prosperity, “let the light of Your(God) face shine on us.”
As the world wonders where answers to their questions will come from, God’s people are simply praying to God to provide the answers. The world wonders, where will we get money? The believers respond by praying, dear God provides us with some money. Where the world wonders, the believers pray to God.
In our daily lives, we come across needs that we wish to see fulfilled. As the world wonders how to get academic success, we pray about it to God. As the world wonders and asks how relationships will work, we pray about it to our God. As the world gets restless and asks how we will excel financially, we pray and trust God to help us. In the name of Jesus’ Amen!
