Daniel 2:14
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.
Daniel and his friends were good, innocent, and right. They were captives from Jerusalem enslaved in Babylon. They were forced to study in Babylon and serve the king of Babylon. They were now grouped together with Babylonian wise men.
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a dream he believed was very important but strangely he couldn’t recall it and he didn’t know the meaning. He summoned the senior wise men of Babylon to help him solve the problem but they couldn’t. He got so furious that he ordered that all wise men in Babylon be put to death. Daniel and his friends heard about it and they knew they too though not consulted would be killed.
Daniel and his friends could have chosen to wait for death hoping God saves them somehow. Daniel and his friends could have protested against the decision and rightly claim that they hadn’t been consulted on the matter. Daniel and his friends could have defiantly expressed the superiority of their God over such a small matter and assured the king that they would resolve the issue in a few days. Daniel and his friends were innocent and right.
The Bible tells us today that Daniel spoke to the King’s officer with wisdom and tact. He didn’t rush declaring the superiority of his God. He didn’t go protesting their innocence and right to be consulted. Daniel spoke to the king’s officer with wisdom and tact.
Good News Translation
Then Daniel went to Arioch, commander of the king’s bodyguard, who had been ordered to carry out the execution. Choosing his words carefully,
New Living Translation
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, came to kill them, Daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion.
Wisdom and tact have to do with choosing words that you use carefully. Choose carefully the words you use in that discussion. Choose wisely the words you use in that text, email, or letter. Choose wisely the words you use in public and even in private. Wisdom and tact have everything to do with the choice of words. Choice of words you use when communicating with your spouse, children, parents, relatives, juniors, seniors, clients, etc. Particularly when you believe you are right, choose your words wisely. Many people who are on the right or are innocent lack this wisdom and tact!
Wisdom and tact have to do with how you handle the situation. Your body language. Your attitude. Not threatening the other person is key in handling situations. If Daniel had gone threatening the king’s officer with last day’s judgment, he would be right, but poorly handling the situation. How you handle the situation is what tact and wisdom are made of. When people feel they are right and or innocent, they poorly handle situations. They lack wisdom and tact!
Are you using wisdom and tact at your workplace? Are you using wisdom and tact in your business? Are you using wisdom and tact in your preaching and teaching? Are you using wisdom and tact in your marriage and parenting? Are you using wisdom and tact? May God grant us wisdom and tact, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
