Luke 5:18
Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
Luke 5:19
When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
The man was paralyzed. He couldn’t walk so he had to be carried. Some men heard about the sick man. The Bible calls them, some men, Luke 5:18. Some men, because they were not relatives or close family members. Some men because they seem to be strangers in relation to this man. Some men, because they did not declare their relationship to this sick man. Some men, because after he was healed they disappeared and did not stay to be thanked. They did not wait for the vote of thanks. They did not ensure that the Bible writers captured their names.
We need some men in this life. Some men who will do everything to help a stranger get employed without asking for appreciation. Some men who will speak for the needy and helpless, and walk away when the needy and helpless have been assisted, without taking pictures for social media. We need some men who will take strangers to the hospitals. We need some men who will help someone who is not of their race or tribe. Some men who go beyond relationships. Some men who are just human and converted!
When some men heard that Jesus could heal this man, they took action. They looked for Jesus. When they found Jesus, they brought this paralyzed man to Jesus. They carried the paralyzed man to Jesus. We need some men, both men, and women so to speak, who will carry strangers and everyone else to Jesus. Some men who will not be comfortable until another person’s problem has been addressed. We need this caliber of people around us. We need some men!
When some men brought the paralyzed man to Jesus, they found a huge crowd obstructing them. The crowd couldn’t allow them to meet Jesus. The crowd was tempting them to delay, hoping that the crowd would reduce. Between them and Jesus, the crowd was the problem. The crowd is still the problem between many of us and Jesus. There is a crowd of relatives. A crowd of best friends. A crowd of expectations from the significant other. If it wasn’t for the crowd we would have met Jesus and received healing. If it wasn’t for the crowd, some men would have succeeded in getting the paralyzed man healed by Jesus upon arrival without delay!
What has the crowd done to you? Did you know the crowd can make you date and marry the wrong person? Did you know the crowd can cheer you in wrongdoing? Did you know the crowd can cheer you on your way to being destroyed and they know it? Do you know the crowd can make you feel invincible when indeed you are not much? Did you know the crowd can make you spend money in a regrettable way? The crowd obstructed these men from meeting Jesus!
These men refused to be lured by the deceptiveness of the crowd. They ignored the crowd. They stopped engaging the crowd. They refused to negotiate with the crowd. That is the only way to beat the crowd, ignore, don’t engage, and no negotiations!
These men left the crowd and went up the roof where there was no crowd. The crowd stays at the bottom. There is no crowd at the top. Few people get top scores. The majority of the scores are at the bottom. If you wish to excel, leave the crowd and go higher. Go higher spiritually. Go higher academically. Go higher financially. Go higher socially. When you go higher you lose the crowd and you eventually solve the problem. Is the crowd your problem? Go higher in prayer, Bible study, and commitment to God. Go higher and see God bless you!
They went higher and opened the roof then lowered the paralyzed man to Jesus in the room. Then Jesus healed the man. They quit focusing on the crowd and their friend was healed. If you quit focusing on the crowd, great excellence awaits you. May God save us from the crowd, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
