2 Samuel 1:26
I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,
more wonderful than that of women.
Today’s passage is part of a song that King David ordered everyone in Judah to learn and sing as they mourned the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan, 2 Samuel 1:18. Jonathan was killed at war by the Philistines, 1 Samuel 31:1-2. King Saul was seriously wounded at that war, 1 Samuel 31:3. King Saul and his armor-bearer killed themselves at the war field, 1 Samuel 31:4-5. David mourned their deaths and asked all Judah to sing that song as part of mourning. In our text today, David mourns Jonathan his friend. They loved each other as friends. May you find this type of love very soon!
David sings that the love between him and Jonathan was more wonderful if compared to that love of men and women. A few individuals have wrongly concluded that this was a homosexual relationship. Nothing is further from the truth. Adultery and fornication was sin in Israel. Nathan condemned David when he committed adultery with a woman named Bathsheba. Homosexuality was completely unacceptable. David would not have ordered a song in Judah that extolled a vice that God prohibited. Someone would have condemned David for this open sin. The fact that it was ordered to be sung by all, is a clear indication that it has nothing to do with homosexuality that some perverted individuals want to make biblical.
Homosexuality is a sin like any other sin. Sin can be overcome by prayer and petitions to God. Counseling and other interventions in addition to prayer will yield great success over homosexuality. Homosexuality is a sin like all other sins. Those who hate others and homosexuals are sinners in the same category. Those who are tribalists or racists are as bad as homosexuals before God. Those who skip church attendance, give less tithe and offerings are all as bad as homosexuals. We do not need special condemnation of homosexuals nor do we need to publicly shame them. We should treat them like all other sinners. They have the right to live and to choose to accept or reject what we preach.
David and Jonathan were not in a homosexual relationship. David and Jonathan so loved each other, that Jonathan helped David to run away from Saul his father. David mourns Jonathan by saying, that, your love was more wonderful than that of women. May we find this type of love soon!
The love of men and women is sang about, dramatized, narrated, and praised. However, David says that the love he had for Jonathan was greater and more wonderful. Men and women in a relationship can easily replace each other if they disagree or death occurs. But a true friend like Jonathan to David cannot be replaced. The position remains vacant. The married can remarry, but you can’t refriend if such a word would exist for those who lose friends. You can replace a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancee, husband, and wife, but you can’t replace a true friend. David says of his friendship with Jonathan that it was more wonderful than that of women. May we find this type of love soon!
Men and women become friends and love each other because they have an innate desire for each other. They have a thirst for each other. They satisfy each other’s needs. If that desire ceased, the need for man and woman for each other would instantly cease. They love each other to use each other to satisfy their personal needs. They want children so they come together. They want to meet societal expectations of being married, they stay together even when it is not working. Men chase women to get sex and women chase men to get love and companionship. David and Jonathan were just friends, no reasons attached. It was more wonderful than that of women. May we find this type of love soon!
Proverbs 18:24
A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:15
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
A true friend can be closer than a brother. A brother is tied to you by blood relationship. A friend is a choice and divine bond that can’t be explained. Men and women have reasons for loving and relating. True friends have no reason but friendship. When love has a reason it is limited to that reason or condition. When love has no reason or conditions it is the best love. Men and women love with conditions and reasons. Jonathan and David loved each other without reason or condition. It was more wonderful than the love of women. May we find this type of love soon!
John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
God’s love for us is unconditional and has no reasons. This is the love God recommends that we have for each other. We should still marry and get married. But over and above the love in marriage, we should find love that is unconditional in marriage and outside. That kind of love is born of God. It is more wonderful than the love of women. May we find this type of love soon!
Dear God we need all types of love available, provide them to us dear God. Above all else, may we experience this love that Jonathan and David had for each other, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
