Nothing With God Is More Than Something

Haggai 2:3
‘Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?
Haggai 2:4
But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.

God speaks through Haggai. God sends an encouragement message to Israelites who have just returned from captivity. God tells them that He knows that they are comparing the current temple under construction and the former Solomon’s magnificent temple. God tells them that He knows that according to them the current temple seems like nothing. Nothing with God is more than something.

Then God encourages the leaders who are in charge of building the temple that seems like nothing. God tells Zerubbabel, Joshua, and everybody else to be strong. God tells them to keep working on this project that has been considered as nothing by the builders and everybody else. God tells them to keep working on it, even though it is nothing to them and many others. Nothing with God is more than something.

God tells them that though it seems like nothing, He is with them. God assures them of His presence. God’s presence changes the value of nothing into something of the greatest value. It is better to have nothing with God than something with a short-term world around us. Nothing with God is more than something.

The temple under construction was so bad in comparison with the former temple. It was so bad that no one wanted to be associated with it. Then God decides to associate Himself with it. God tells the builders, I am with you. If it is shameful, we take the shame together. It is embarrassing, we take the embarrassment together. As you build this nothing, I am with you. Nothing with God is more than something.

Sometimes our efforts seem like nothing. The advice goes to deaf ears. Parenting seems like doing nothing. When engaged in doing what seems like nothing, keep connected to God. Nothing with God is more than something.

Our workplace activities and our business activities may all amount to what may be considered nothing. Our efforts to improve and make our marriage better may be considered nothing. Our best efforts to find a life partner may seem like nothing. Our academic efforts and results may make it seem like we are engaged in doing nothing. If you are doing your best and doing the right thing, do not give up, keep doing nothing. Nothing with God is more than something.

If I must do that which seems like nothing, may I do it with you dear God, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
