Esther 4:16
“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”
Mordecai convinced Esther that she must use her position as queen to save the Israelites from the annihilation planned by Haman. It is in order to use our positions in society to do that which saves God’s people and also benefits them. Positions are God-given and should be used not only to get an income but to also serve God’s agenda. How has your position served God’s agenda?
Esther 4:14
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Mordecai tells Esther that her position has coincided with a dire need for God’s people. She is in power at a time when God’s people need help which she can offer. Mordecai points out that God has done it intentionally. The need you are aware of and your ability to fix it, are divinely orchestrated. If you fail to rise to the occasion you would have failed yourself and God will bring help from elsewhere and because you will now be irrelevant to God’s agenda, He will do away with you and everything yours. If you can help, have you helped? Are people suffering, yet it is in your power to help? Is God’s work being frustrated as you silently watch? If you do not rise to the occasion to help, God will bring help from elsewhere, but you won’t survive to be useless any further!
When Esther heard this sharp but true message from Mordecai, she asked that Jews all over the kingdom go into three days of fasting and prayer. In our main text today, Esther promises to also fast and pray with her assistants. Fasting and praying are seeking spiritual power. Fasting and praying are seeking spiritual solutions. Fasting and praying are reaching out to God. To fast and pray first is to prioritize the things of God first. Fasting and praying first is to make spiritual matters come first.
Esther had been requested to use her position as queen, to go to the king and plead with him to spare the lives of Jews. Going to the king and discussing this matter was a social issue since she was his wife. Going to the king and discussing this matter was a political issue because it involved slaves known as Jews. Going to the king and discussing this issue was a diplomatic matter because it involved the delicate balance between getting help and disappointing the king’s corrupt lieutenant. Going to the king was legal since it was illegal to approach the king’s throne before invitation and it could lead to death even for the queen unless on arrival he stretches his scepter.
While there were many angels to this problem, Esther told Mordecai and other Jews that we should secure the spiritual first. Don’t rush to the legal, secure the spiritual first. Do not rush to diplomacy, secure the spiritual first. Do not plot on the political, secure the spiritual first. The first thing you do is not plan how to approach the king, but seek God’s approval and backing through fasting and prayer. Secure the spiritual first!
We all face a myriad of problems, I recommend to you to secure the spiritual first. Problems have a financial angle but secure the spiritual first. Problems may have a counseling angle that can solve them but secure the spiritual first. Problems have a socio-political angle and you may need meetings to plan and counter other moves and plead with others, but whatever you ought to do, secure the spiritual first.
Seek God’s approval and favor before trying anything that you think will work. Secure the spiritual first! Before rallying godfathers in your favor, secure the spiritual first. Before rallying your race and or tribe or family behind you, secure the spiritual first. Before ensuring the boss is on your side, secure the spiritual first. Before making a customer king in your business, secure the spiritual first. Before winning the masses in your political endeavors, secure the spiritual first. Before rushing out to beat a deadline or chase some deal or do some work, secure the spiritual first. May God help us to always secure the spiritual first, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
