Mark 1:11
And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:12
At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
Mark 1:13
and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
After the baptism of Jesus, a voice came from heaven affirming Him. The voice affirmed Jesus in public. The voice affirmed Jesus as a beloved Son and a pleasing Son. Affirmation gives us a high of a good feeling. But what follows the affirmation is totally opposite. After being affirmed, Jesus was immediately led to the wilderness. Jesus was taken to the wilderness so that He can be tempted by Satan. The wilderness was so lonely except for wild animals. However, Jesus was not really alone, the angels attended to Him. Tempted after affirmation but perfectly attended to.
In a world of sin, we must acknowledge that good times are not the only times, there will always be terrible times. Until we get to heaven where there is no sin and God’s will is final, we will have to contend with the reality that in this world, after good times there will be bad times. Jesus had a good time being affirmed in public, but it was followed by extreme temptation. Tempted after affirmation but perfectly attended to.
For those who trust God, the bad times that must come in this life are regulated and supervised by God. Without God, bad times will come, but you are on your own. When you trust God and relate with Him well, any bad times are designed to achieve His purposes. The Bible tells us that Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit. If I must go to the wilderness, may I be led by the Spirit. May I never go to the Wilderness without the Spirit. May I never be lured into the wilderness by Satan. May God’s Spirit guide me if I must go to the wilderness. Tempted after affirmation but perfectly attended to.
God does not tempt us, James 1:13. He may allow Satan who has requested to tempt us to do so, but He does not tempt us. Satan requested to tempt Job. God led Job into temptation by determining how far Satan could go. While Satan had an intention to destroy Job, God used that temptation to strengthen Job’s faith and even ours. When God guides you into a temptation situation, He ensures that you are not permanently harmed. Tempted after affirmation but perfectly attended to.
While in the wilderness it seemed that Jesus was alone with the wild animals. At times during temptation, it seems everyone has abandoned us. While it is true that Jesus was alone without any human support, He was not alone. While it is true that people can abandon us and they really do, but God though not visible never abandons us. In our text, today the Bible tells us that angels were attending to Jesus. In the lonely and fearful wilderness, angels attended to Jesus and they still attend to us. Tempted after affirmation but perfectly attended to.
Dear child of God, you are not alone in your crisis. God led you in and He will lead you out. You may be abandoned by those you least expected would abandon you, but God has sent angels to attend to you. In your deepest crisis, you are being attended to. You are safe. You will come out victorious in Jesus’ name, Amen!
