2 Peter 1:12-13
(12)So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. (13) I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,
Apostle Peter in his second letter to the church makes a revelation we should not miss. In our text today he tells the church that he will always remind them of things they already know. He will remind them of the truth even though they are firmly established in it.
What Peter is telling the church is that we will always need reminders. Knowing something is not an excuse to reject reminders. It is healthy to be reminded even if you know. You can’t ask for new truths simply because you are established in this truth. You must be reminded even that which you are firmly established in. Apostle Peter is telling us there is a great value in getting reminders.
Apostle Peter tells the church that the reminder will refresh their memory. To refresh is to give it the energy it had at the beginning. To refresh is to make it as exciting as it was at first. To refresh is to recreate the great feeling of a first experience. To refresh is to be empowered with the zeal that boosted us at the beginning. There is refreshing power in reminders.
When we go for worship, most of us are already established and know the beliefs and teachings. Therefore, we go for worship to be reminded. Sometimes at worship, we may learn a few things but most importantly is that we go for reminders.
Do not get tired of the church because they say the same thing or do the same thing. Remember we go there for reminders and not for news. News has to be new, reminders are the same old thing. There is power in reminders.
Parenting is not about informing children. We teach, we inform, and then for the rest of their lives, we keep reminding them. A parent like a religious leader spends time reminding.
Reminders at this point sound like a boring routine of being lectured on what we already know. Nothing can be further from the truth than such an assertion. Apostle Peter says reminders must be refreshing.
Something refreshing is nicely sweet and attractive. As we lead worship to remind people, and make it nice sweet, and attractive. Make the reminder refreshing. We already know God loves us. Remind us in a creative way. Remind us in a new way. Remind us in a dramatic unforgettable way. Remind us in a manner that we like. Make the reminder refreshing!
Songs remind us of our faith. Make the songs refreshing. We are not supposed to persevere under the hour of reminder. We are supposed to enjoy the moments of being reminded. Make the music sweet, nice, memorable, and attractive. Make the music refreshing!
The preaching should be a refreshing reminder. The lesson should be made refreshing. The music should be refreshing too. Parenting should be refreshing as we guide and remind. Leadership must be refreshing as we guide and remind. Make the reminder a refreshing experience!
There is untapped power in reminding people what they know and are already established in. Being an established member or well-trained religious leader is not an excuse to go for worship then stay outside busy with everything else except worshiping. Sit down and be reminded too. Just like members need reminders, you too need to be reminded.
Why do you need a daily devotional to read and pray? Not because you don’t know, but because there is refreshing power in reminders. After working for some time, workers are sent for refresher courses or training. They go for reminders.
Continuous Medical Education is about information and reminders. Continuous Pastoral Education is about updates and mostly reminders. Conferences, retreats, seminars, and meetings are all about updates and reminders.
If you miss reminders even with good excuses, you start dying spiritually and even professionally. There is living power in reminders. Go for reminders. Embrace reminders. Make reminders refreshing!
‘Now, dear Lord, as we pray,
take our hearts and minds far away
from the press of the world all around
to your throne where grace does abound.
May our lives be transformed by Your love,
MAY OUR SOULS BE REFRESHED FROM ABOVE.
At this moment, let people everywhere
join us now as we come to You in prayer.’
Dear God, remind us of Your will and purpose. Remind us of Your goodness. May we be refreshed by You, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
