Exodus 2:8-10
(8) “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. (9) Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. (10) When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”
When Moses was born, Pharaoh the king of Egypt had given a command that all Israelite children be killed. Pharaoh hoped that by doing that he will control the population of Israelites and subdue them. When Moses was born, he was supposed to die.
The parents of Moses were Levites. They did not want their son to die. They did everything within their power to ensure Moses survives. They hid Moses. They fed him in secret. They nursed him in secret. They struggled to ensure no cry or hint of a child would leak out lest the government officials come and kill their child.
Moses grew in secret until he got to an age where he couldn’t be hidden. It was a matter of time before someone discovered that there was a child hidden here. The parents of Moses had reached the end of their ability to hide and take care of Moses.
When their ability to take care of Moses reached the end, they did something that was symbolic of surrendering him into God’s hands. They made a basket that was waterproof, Exodus 2:2-3. They then let the child float among reeds of the River Nile. What more could they do. All was now in God’s hands.
A girl, a sister to Moses was assigned to watch the basket and report what happens to it. As the basket bearing Moses floated among reads and Moses cried, Pharaoh’s daughter appeared and claimed the basket and the child. Pharaoh’s daughter was so excited to get a child from the River Nile. Egyptians worshipped River Nile as a deity. Therefore this was a child from a deity to the Pharaohs.
Remember Moses who had been left in God’s hands is now in the hands of the family of the Egyptians the enemies of Israel. Not just any Egyptians, but the monarchy of Egypt. Moses is in the hands of those who murdered many other children. They know that Moses is an Israelite, Exodus 2:6. An Israelite given to her by the god River Nile. We gave God of heaven the child and He, in turn, gives the child to the enemies. What is God doing? Can we trust Him with other children? Is this a wise move?
Sometimes we think God has messed up. Sometimes we think God has not handled a matter well. Sometimes we think we can do better than God in this or that matter. Sometimes God leaves us wondering if He calculated well. We are hiding Moses from Egyptians, yet God hands him over to Egyptians!
Our text today tells us that the sister to Moses ran and asked Pharaoh’s daughter if she needed a helper to nurse the child. Pharaoh’s daughter granted the request. Moses’ sister brought her mother who is also Moses’s mother to come to pick Moses. Moses was therefore brought up by his own mother. The child who was hidden and facing a continuous threat to life now lived openly with his own mother but under orders of Pharaoh’s daughter.
At this point we are no longer in fear of what God does, instead, we celebrate the great wisdom of our God. Once a matter is surrendered into God’s hands, trust Him even when things seem to be going wrong. God always steps in in a great way eventually. Things get better when God takes over!
Moses was now in God’s hands. In God’s hands no fear. Moses could now grow up openly. Moses could now be taught the Israelite religion. Moses could now be told who are his true parents and why Pharaoh’s daughter claims him. Things get better when God takes over!
The mother to Moses was not just allowed the then rare favor of taking care of her son, she was even paid for it Exodus 2:9. The situation got better than when they were taking of him. Moses in the hands of God was safest and best-taken care of. Things get better when God takes over!
Education gets better when we do our part then let God take over what is beyond us. Our health gets better when we do our best in selective eating, drinking, rest, exercise, etc., then let God take over what is beyond our abilities. Work becomes productive when we do our best and let God handle where our abilities end. Relationships are much more rewarding when we faithfully play our roles as partners, then let God handle what is too complex for us. Spiritual life gets better if we pray, study the Bible, attend worship, and let God deal with the rest. Things get better when God takes over!
Take over, Lord! It may initially look like a wrong decision but take over my Lord. It may look like you have lost control but take over Lord. I am convinced that things will get better when you take over. May things get better as You take over, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
